I am hearing a lot of good things about Paralenz so may well move over to one of those when my GoPro7 black is no more. I had my GoPro 3 for nearly 4 years so it won't be soon.

There's no right or wrong here - really depends on how much you enjoy the hobby, how much you plan to dive, and of course, how much cash you have to spend. I started underwater by borrowing a friend's first-gen SeaLife digital camera, then slowly pieced together a used compact system from eBay. Traded work (outside my regular job) for camera gear as well. If you have a budget we can make more educated suggestions as an upgrade from GoPro!

Brett am not looking for advice here just trying to understand what is the path from there

I should have mentioned that my wife jumped up to a TG-4 as well. She is more of a stills shooter and was getting frustrated by the extreme wide angle of the GoPro. The TG-4 has been a great choice for her. Coupled with a YS-03 flash, it takes nice portraits and the microscope mode is insane. I frequently borrow it for night snorkelling and shooting critters in our lagoon.

Have you tried shooting video with it? I just watched a video from Backscatter on best settings for shooting video underwater. My son has a TG-5 that i'm thinking about borrowing.

Yes, I have. Video is not the strong suit of the TG-4. The camera is limited to 1080p and does not consistently set a custom white balance. It is decent in microscope mode with video lights. For wide angle, you would be better off with a GoPro.

Thanks Otter, I'm not sure if the TG5 shoots 4K but I'm really only interested in 1080. I'll have to look if you can manually set the wht balance.

I'm confused about your poll.

For me, the GoPro is primarily a video recording device. But the options in your poll are stills cameras. If you want to shoot video, fine. By all means use a GoPro (I have one myself) if that's good enough for you, but if you want to shoot stills IMNSHO more or less any half-decent compact will beat the heck out of a GoPro, IQ-wise.

That said, my current rig is an Olympus OM-D EM-5 in a Nauticam housing with a GoPro mounted on the top of the housing. I started my UW photo career with a Canon G9, but pretty quickly upgraded to an m43 system. With two strobes and a top-mounted GoPro for video.

It does shoot 4K but not in microscope mode. You can set manual white balance but the problem is that it does not always work. If the colour temperature is outside the range of the camera, it will result in an error and the custom white balance will not be set.

I keep misreading the thread title as "next step after going pro" and thinking, "what's left? Actual gills?"

Sorry, carry on.
