Okay. So I've got a set of Apeks ATX 200's set up as a doubles rig that I'm thinking of buying to turn into a SM rig. Wouldn't take much. They've been serviced recently. Just need to add in an SPG on the one side. If I choose to use one in singles config I'm well prepared for that based on what I currently have and what the set comes with.

It's an older reg, but it's been serviced in the lasy few months. That said, if that dive shop that serviced the reg set is anything like one of my LDS's.....I wouldn't pay $5 for the rig.

I know the ATX line has a smaller exhaust valve that can send more bubbles straight up in front of my face, but I don't that's much different from the AL Titan's I dive right now. Bottom line....I'm used to it.

If it matters....it looks like they are the Tungsten version and not the chromed version. (I don't care about looks but I DO care about performance, and from what I've read, the Tungsten version has a better finish and may last longer than the chromed version.)

Feel free to hose me if I sound like I'm on drugs. I can take criticism, no problem. These regs just sound like a really good deal even though they're almost as old as my oldest kid. (Born Christmas 2001)

If I'm drunk, please talk me out of it. I'd hate to spend $550 CAD on something that's a waste of air. OTOH....I'd hate to miss out on a deal if they've barely seen water and even though they're an older set they perform as well or better than regs made today.

Side note: I've purchased the bible and intend to service my own regs from now on. Maybe this makes a difference, maybe not. What say you?

Not my favorite regs due to hose routing, but there's nothing wrong with them performance wise.

Ideally, for sidemount you want a rotating turret with a 5th port. It gives you the best options for hose routing. These would certainly work, they just wouldn't be optimal. And if you can get them for a steal, you may be able to sell them or trade them for a good deal on something better suited to the direction you want to head (think Apeks DST first stages).

I dare to say that in terms of performance there wont be a big difference within the Apeks models. It´s rather a question of design and some features (5th porth, swivel turret, placement of ports, etc.). So while I would not consider the ATX 200 the best for sidemount, in terms of hose routing (So agreeing with JohnnyC), if you think its ok for you and the price is good, go for it.
Without knowing the prices overseas, however, I would think $500 CAD for an 18 year old reg set not to be a great bargain.

So the DST's with XTX 50's are the best way to go? Or should I consider the HOG D3 setup? Again,I'd like to be able to service my own stuff.

The original price was $600 CAD. Talked him down to $550. At current exhange that's about 832 euros and 737 USD. I dunno........sounds pricey when I convert it......I can get a HIG D3 setup ready for SM for about $1100 CAD and can get the Apeks SM setup for about $1500. Maybe a bad idea.

Thanks. :) You might have just made my wife very happy.

I can not speak about the HOG, since i do not know them. With Apeks, you can use the same service kits for all regs (except the Flight and maybe one or two other "exotic" models). They work needs pretty much the same steps, with some small differences between the models.

The Hog stuff is fine, but you'd be better off going with the Deep6 regs. Includes the first service and kit. They even provide the manual so you can service yourself if you want. The company is the guy that used to be Hog. They're an upgrade from the Hog D3's.

Also, $550 CAD is $410 US. You're converting the wrong way. Dunno if that puts it in a different perspective for you. (It would be 550 US = 737 CAD, not the other way around)

You think of Apex regs as "older equipment"? Obviously you need to buy new regs, and just send these inferior older regs to me.

Just thinking about the age is all. I know they're probably a lot better than what I have right now, and I may still buy them to use as a singles setup and have a spare first stage kicking around also.
