COZUMEL, March 8.- Cozumel will be the base for a US hurricane fighter aircraft. Due to its geographical position in front of the Caribbean Sea, the island will host this aircraft together with the meteorology specialists who monitor the Atlantic Ocean in the cyclonic weather season.
It transpired that this year Cozumel will serve as the base of the so-called "Hurricane Hunters" (Hurricane Hunters), name that identifies the specialists of the Navy, Air Force and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA by acronyms in English) , which make up this group responsible for analyzing and investigating the hurricanes that form in this area of the hemisphere from June to November of each year, including excursions in the eyes of hurricanes trained and in translation.
When he was interviewed, Hector Mac Marin, director of Civil Protection, Fire and Lifeguards, confirmed the news by holding meetings with staff of the National Water Commission (Conagua) at the national level, airport authorities, of the Ministry of Defense. National (Sedena) and the Secretariat of the Navy Navy (Semar) and representatives of the City Council, in order to organize the logistics for arrival and stay of the hurricane-fighter plane.
He expressed that the intention to establish an operational base for the Air Force of the United States (USAF) is because of the geographical location of the island of Cozumel in the Caribbean Sea since it is in an area close to the transit of these meteorological phenomena during the annual season, in addition to the collaboration agreements with the federal government through the Conagua, and it is expected that this year before the season begins to operate.
Cozumel will not only serve for the provisioning of the aircraft, but will take place the protection of that plane, which technically is a flying meteorological office with state-of-the-art technology, and the military authorities will be in charge of allocating a position for the airplane in its facilities.
The idea is that on the island have their own space for ground operations and the runway of the International Airport of Cozumel go to their meteorological reconnaissance flights when a system is formed in the Atlantic for this course.
He concluded by saying that the plane depends on the National Hurricane Center of Miami, but it is operated by military personnel. It is worth mentioning that one of these planes was on the island on April 21, 2015, making a stopover after a study flight.
