there is no reason to have an spg
One good and common example of why an SPG is good is on a liveaboard where you tank is filled and they want to look at your SPG to see all is well. AI-only is useless unless YOU are standing there.
I get it: you hate hoses. But an SPG can be a button gauge mounted directly on the first stage...so the tank filler can see it. And so can you, without firing up your computer.

On our channel island liveaboard they filled all the tanks without regs attached. Maybe its different other places but id just leave my computer on the reg same as an spg. If they required psi readings for a fill. battery life seems forever and I carry about ten extras in bag though havent needed to change in almost a year.

I don't understand your post. Of course they fill the tanks without regs attached. What do you mean, leave your computer on the reg? I thought you had just two hoses and were using AI.

By the way: you have appropriated my avatar (tursiops truncatus) and are now using it. That is really bad internet behavior. Please find another avatar..

You just said that they need to see the spg to fill it so thats why you would keep an spg now you say they only fill without regs and dont check.and i didnt mean reg on tank while filling but sitting beside it. if they can look at your reg after you reattach it they can look at a dive computer just like looking at an spg.

You are contradicting yourself. And I dont understand your logic.

Let's see if we can make this clear...
1. The tanks are filled with regs off.
2. Then the regs are put on, and normally the tank monkeys would look at your SPG to make sure all is OK.
3. A button gauge on the reg gives them something to look at. No SPG but AI means they have to look at your computer, which you are happy to leave there with your reg set. They then know how to work your computer, and be willing to turn it on, wait, and then read.

You clearly do not like hoses. My point was only that you can have a button SPG on the first stage without needing a hose.

I believe everyone should dive with whatever equipment they want. ponys included

So what's the point of ScubaBoard? Wouldn't that be the answer to any gear question? "Dive with whatever you want, dive and let dive"..?

I agree with you about the pony, BTW...

Ha, so controversy keeps the gears going? Ok Ill buy that

Nah. Reading someone else's point of view with an open mind keeps the gears going.

I'm a trimix CCR diver with over a thousand dives. This week I read something about a diving procedure (O2 flush on descent) that was different from what I had been trained to do and had been doing for the past few years. After a little back and forth, I decided to change my diving practices.

Actually listening to someone else, especially someone more experienced, might save my life someday. Much better than just figuring out how to "win" the argument.

which is why I just bought a pony tank....

oh btw I wasnt being argumentative in your last comment I quoted. I actually agree with your thoughts on the why of scubaboard

That's a really good question. I think it applies to optional gear and different gear configurations. For example, most would agree that a tank, a regular, a mask, and fins are mandatory and that fins should be worn on the feet and the mask on your head, not the other way around.
