Hey everyone!

I do not yet have an open water certification, but I have been interested for the last couple of years and will finally be getting certified this summer. In the meantime I love reading about SCUBA and learning as much as I can online.

I have an opportunity to write a college-level research paper on a topic of my choice. I'd love to write it on something SCUBA related, but I don't have enough knowledge on the subject to know what needs more research.

I'd love some thoughts on what new or experienced divers think could use some research such as disputed topics or topics that are mostly based on opinions but many people don't know much about the factual information behind. Or even questions that you have thought of but haven't been able t

Thanks for any input! :)

Edit: I will not actually be doing my own physical research on a topic, but rather combing through various sources and research that has already been done and putting them in conversation with each other to come to a conclusion about the topic.

What kind of age is college ? I am not a native English speaker.

That would help me to see which complexity you need for your paper.

Check out the Rubicon Foundation for scholarly articles on scuba related stuff. It will be a good resource.

In the USA college = university and usually start at 19 yrs old right after finishing high/secondary school. College/University is usually 4 years study (two semesters each year or 3 quarters leaving the summer as vacation time).

Maybe the misrepresentation of scuba in the popular cinema? Plenty of material to draw from, something your target audience (other college students?) can relate to, and an opportunity to delve as deep (pun intended) as you like into the technical aspects of scuba (and how they're completely ignored by Hollywood.)

That's a very good idea. Without collecting any real data most technical subjects will not lend themselves to a research project, but this could be done easily.

Excellent suggestion.

@SeaTriskeLion, what’s your degree in or your topic preference. Do you prefer something technically oriented or maybe about diver’s opinions on a subject?

If you're looking for opinion-based topics, maybe the use of EANx (Nitrox) as a breathing gas on normal recreational dives as compared to regular air. There are arguments on either side of the discussion so if you're trying to write a persuasive paper, then this might be a great topic to use. Another one that's pretty opinion-based that's actually ongoing in a thread right now is the use of a hosed air-integrated (AI) computer vs. a wireless air-integrated (AI) computer. Again a good possible topic for a persuasive paper. If it's more for informational purposes, maybe something like making each successive dive shallower than the previous. The old way says always make you first dive of the day the deepest and each repetitive dive afterward shallower, but recent research has shown that this need not necessarily be the case. There was an article in Dive Training magazine a year or so ago regarding this topic so maybe something like that?

I do also love the suggestion about the misrepresentation of scuba in cinema. That's a great topic! Seems like every movie I see that has scuba involved I always find myself picking out the things they get wrong rather than actually enjoying the film.

Whatever topic you decide on, though, you can find a wealth of knowledge here @ SB. Maybe hit up @Sam Miller III as he seems to be pretty much the resident expert/historian on all things scuba. I have no doubt he could tell you some stories and provide more information than you really ever wanted to know.

Several of the topics mentioned above seem confusing or controversial only because the suggester doesn't know much about the subject, But, I suppose that makes them good topics....because others also may not know!

I like the idea of misrepresentation in cinema, but would broaden it to the media in general.
Almost every newspaper article about scuba mentions oxygen tanks, rather than air tanks.

The silliness of unbridled fear of sharks -- even just fish -- is another media-caused issue.
