My brother and sister-in-law took the Avianca flight from LAX to San Salvador to RTB in September and said it was fine. The best part was that it arrived at a different time rather than right when all three major airlines arrive on Saturdays.
If you search Avianca here or on the TripAdvisor Roatan forum, you will get more info.

Unfortunately, Roatan is just not an easy, convenient or inexpensive flight destination for those of us flying from the Pacific NW or even from California. I was just there this past August. Saving grace for me was that the flight was paid for as a business expense. I did the United flight from LAX to Houston on a Friday, spent the night in the Airport Marriott and then got on the United flight Saturday morning into RTB. The other option was a redeye Friday night into Houston with the connecting flight Saturday. I don't do well with Red Eye's, so opted to get into Houston at a reasonable time Friday and get a good night's sleep in the airport hotel and arrive fresh and rested.

I considered all of the alternative options, but none of them made sense to me for various reasons.

All of that to say... it is just a pain in the behind to get there and if you wait, prices might come down into the $850 to $950 range-- probably never going to get less than that. But, they also shouldn't go any higher than the current $1280 RT. So, I would advise to wait and keep checking in hopes of rates coming down between now and the spring. You have some time still.

Avianca is running about $1166 now, but my cheapest option still seems to be Alaska to LAX and United from there.

ALSO A SAFE

Also a safer option than Avianca for many reasons. Trust me, I lived in Central America for 7 years.
Yeah, I flew TACA once 33 years ago and immediately understood why it's called Take A Chance Airline. With Avianca my biggest concern though is a missed connection. The on time performance hasn't been great

Exactly! that's the reason I didn't consider Avianca. Double whammy! Red Eye into San Salvador, arriving at O Dark Thirty with the likelihood of missing your connecting flight and being stuck for another day and your luggage also having a 50/50 chance of making it.

Once on TACA they made us select just one piece of luggage (for both of us) that they promised to load on our plane, the rest of the luggage would (might) follow us later. We picked the bag with our dive gear.

And if TACA was (back in the day) running true to form, the OTHER bag showed up.

They have been quite reliable in the last 10+ years, but I always fly from US straight to RTB, no mainland foolishness to "save money".

I've gone with Avianca quite a few times and even overnighted in the dreaded San Pedro Sula and I am still here to talk about it. Do I get a medal?

More often than not Flying Saturday to Saturday is the best option.

Tweaking your dates to June 29th to July 20th brings up a price of 1280 for a flight with United stopping in Houston. The one you mention in the OP. Cheaper options are out there but with 2+ stops I would pay the extra $100 to avoid too many stops.

Flying through San Salvador is a breeze though! One of the easiest airports to transfer through worldwide in my opinion.

I would not be at all surprised to see the prices come down between now and then, I would leave it for a few months if I were you. I reckon you will get it below $800 if you wait until Feb/March. Go onto google flights and turn on the price tracker so you get emails when the price changes.

Sometimes booking 2 separate flights reduces the price by quite a lot, but you will have to claim and recheck bags and missed connections will be on you, which is a risk, (book a long layover) Here is a blog post I wrote a while ago that is a neat trick. $300 round trip to Roatan? Here is a good trick to fly AA to Roatan for less.

This trick currently has no availability for your dates but again, I wouldn't be surprised if availability pops up for it in the coming months. I have a habit of checking on Sundays which seems to be the day they release reward flights on this route.
