M2, you get Nitrox fills and paired with more experienced divers. For rec divers, a Rescue Cert is best. In strong currents, even with a DM cert, I would keep an eye on you.
I find it interesting that you think a Rescue Cert is best. I don't think anything has changed, but I couldn't get my DM cert unless I had a Rescue cert. While I agree that everyone with a DM cert is not necessarily qualified to work or assist as a DM, it DOES imply that they have a Rescue cert. (EDIT: It also doesn't mean they are still capable of a rescue just because they hold the card.) One of my first posts on SB was the fact that just because you hold a c-card (for anything) doesn't mean you are currently proficient in that area. ALL it means that on a given day you passed the minimum requirements to obtain that certification.
I would have no problem with you keeping an eye on me, however, I would hope that once you "checked me out" that I wouldn't have to undergo scrutiny on every dive. Also, I would hope that my pairing would allow me to dive to my capability and the level that "I want" rather than an arbitrary level that a dive op thinks "I can".

Cheers - M² (try typing 0178 while holding the alt-key)

Is AOW required for rescue? I thought it only required the navigation dive, so I’ve never thought to use it.

Depends on the agency. PADI requires AOW and a current first aid certification. Others may teach it earlier in the course schedule.

This page says you only have to be a Junior Adventure diver, at least 12, and have completed the Underwater Nav Adventure Dive. And you have to have CPR and 1st Aid or complete that as part of Rescue.

Rescue Diver | PADI

My reading of this suggests that a 12 year old with 7 total dives (4 OW checkout plus 3 Adventure dives) under their belt could meet the prerequisites to take PADI Rescue Diver.

If I'm going on a recreational dive, I would show my SDI pro card. But, if the dive operator asked me to do anything that implied a "leadership" role, I would very explicitly decline. My pro insurance is provided by the shop I work for and does not cover me unless I'm working for my shop. Accepting any kind of role where leadership is implied, but I am not covered by insurance, would not be acceptable to me. Especially involving divers that I am anything less than very familiar with.

They might meet the prerequisites (or they might not, IDK), but I'm not convinced they'd pass. It has to be an exceptional 12-year-old with 7 dives in total under their belt to successfully demonstrate the skills I had to demonstrate during my Rescue class

Yes, but this was the rebuttal to the statement that PADI required AOW in order to take Rescue, not that the meeting the requirements would get you a card.

Years ago I used to show my AOW card from 1982. Now I just show an instructor card. I am not opposed to being instabuddied up with someone on a recreational trip, they usually have a group DM anyway, and a tech trip I bring my own buddies.

BTW -- I've had a shop in the keys refuse to give me nitrox fills because all I had on me was a NAUI instructor card ("As a NAUI instructor I can teach nitrox!!", "We're XYZ instructors and we need to have a special NITROX instructor rating, are you sure you can teach it with NAUI?")

One of my buddies gave me one of these wallets kind of as a joke to tease me for collecting so many C cards. I keep all my cards in there now and generally keep it in my truck or one of my dive gear bags. When I go to check in for a dive, I carry the wallet in with me. I'll show my pro card, but if they want something else, I have them all right there.

As is appropriate, there is never any money in that wallet...
