What happens if a battery compartment floods?

My wife's Petrel battery compartment flooded, and the screen blanked before the dive was over. Apparently my wife had knocked the edge of the computer, where the battery cap is, against a rock or something. She hadn't even noticed when it happened. But upon inspection, sure enough there was a nick on the edge. Shearwater had to replace the entire case.
