what happens if it's too tight?
Most reg bodys/parts are chrome-plated brass which is fairly soft. As with any thread form, over torquing will stress the material and take it into its plastic region and cause deformation - it wont return to its original form. Ideally you want to stay in the elastic region of the material to provide clamping force without deforming the thread form. It is possible to repair a stripped hole using a threaded insert which involves oversizing the hole and tapping it for the insert. Not sure that is even done on regulators though

ok.. thanks for the info.. reviewed my reg... so far no harm to the threads... and retightened... then a tug .... tried it in the pool... seems to work fine.. no leaks. Im I good? i've dived probably 100 dives or so... but never worked on my reg.

You're good. No worries. I think that all of us are just trying to get the point across that it doesn't take much.

Before I go diving, I test the tightness by gripping the hose where it is attached to the reg and twisting it. If I can't unscrew it with only hand force, it's tight enough. It doesn't need to be tighter than that. As others have said, too tight and you risk stripping the threads.

You're good now. I know guys who are happy with hand tight but slightly more than that seems logical as I'd like it to not unintentionally unscew.

In further reassurance I've come across a few that were tightened to a point it took significant effort to unscrew and yet the threads weren't damaged. Seems quite forgiving as far as soft brass goes.

Regards,
Cameron
