Posts like this are invaluable to less experienced divers like me, I'd never heard of HPNS til a few pages into this thread so went and educated myself, now I've learnt that compression arthralgia kicks in at depths I've already done and that rushing to shorten bottom time makes it worse. Time to find a decent book on the effects of diving deep(ish) I think. Thanks!

Uhh, you've been to depths that compression arthralgia can kick in but had never heard of HPNS before?? No offense, but that's kind of scary.

That article is just... wow! And can a lawyer get in the way of an investigation the way it seems to be happening?

CRAP!, is that news article for real?

I saw that and was horrified. At first I thought it meant that the family wasn't interested in the body at all, they just wanted all the tanks etc back which horrified me. And then I read the article that what they want is the dive computer and other equipment that would shed some light on what happened. I hope it's not true.

As a St Croix diver and member of the local dive community, I am shocked at this story, posted today on a local news site. Especially the last paragraph, which is an anonymous quote.

Garman Family Attorney to DPNR: 'You Can Keep The Body, We Just Want The Gear' - Virgin Islands Free Press

I've lived here a long time and I had never heard of the "Virgin Islands Free Press" until this incident.

The website is a hollow blog with no details, and the by-line refers to John McCarthy who has been a disgraced figure on the periphery of journalism here for as long as I can remember.

The last paragraph referring to champagne on the beach is a perversion of the last few lines of This Article:

'Stellar diver' disappears into the deep - News - Virgin Islands Daily News

which also sucks, but gives a bit more context.

John McCarthy has grudges against almost everyone. No one with any sense will talk to him. Disregard.

None taken, you're absolutely right altho in my defence it was on air so no helium... which has to be the the worst defence ever lol

It was a few 'trust-me' dives on the Coolidge, the deepest being 62m, I'd done tdi adv nitrox/deco proc and tdi adv wreck to prepare but being a 45m course I guess compression arthralgia wasn't considered a big concern - I was surprised to learn it can affect you from 60m, so I'm definitely going to do less trusting and more learning in future!
