I have a list of 12 shops that offer afternoon dives, requiring from 2 - 4 divers to go out. (Aldodra is not on that list due to the caveats). PM me if you'd like the list.

I am quite certain there are no ops based in Tulum that will lead dives in Cozumel.

The dive shops in Tulum don't really market ocean dives as the diving, according to them, is mediocre. Their push is cenote diving.

Never done the mainland ocean dives from Tulum, but have dived both PDC and Puerto Aventuras. While not the high adventure drift dives on walls that Cozumel offers, we enjoy all the healthy marine life we see during our diving from Puerto Aventuras. We also dive the cenotes, and they are exciting, as well.

Tulum is beautiful as are the cenotes. However, I would reserve Tulum for the relaxation and beautiful beaches and give your diving priorities to Cozumel and the cenotes.

You can dive Cozumel without over nighting, but it will be a long day. You may opt for an afternoon dive to avoid having to get up at 5am.

there are shops that will offer afternoon dives departing between 1:00 and 2:00 (I offer them - not daily, but you can e-mail and I can let you know which afternoons are available during your stay).

There are no Cozumel shops or Tulum shops that offer Cozumel diving without the ferry crossing from Playa del Carmen - the fuel and time would make the trip very expensive - so it simply is not done.

Feel free to send me an e-mail to info@bluextseadiving.com and I can let you know what we have available.

Isn't there an offshore dive site somewhere down there that is pretty much only diveable from Tulum or Puerto Adventuras?

If the Tulum ocean diving is so great, why is it never discussed? Why don't dive shops plan trips to Tulum to dive (not cenotes)? The poster should just plan on starting the trip in Cozumel and dive at least two days then go to Tulum. Avoid Chac Mool cenote. It was the worst one I have ever been to.

Are you thinking about Chinchorro Banks? (I think it's mentioned earlier in the thread, and my spelling is probably incorrect.)I think that area is far enough offshore that you don't come back to shore for SIs, but that Xcalak is a closer jump off point than Tulum. You do need to be south for it to make much sense diving the Chinchorro Banks.

I can understand not wanting to relocate, and it may seem silly to pay for two different rooms at different locations for the same night, but it's done - done it myself elsewhere. Just take gear and an overnight bag.

I think someone mentioned the Colonial? Cute little hotel, a block off of front street & 1/2 block from the main square - but quiet. I enjoyed it. Sometimes available for as little as $30/night. Good idea to travel to Coz in the afternoon, arriving in time for dinner, be there for a morning dive, travel back that afternoon.

Almost to Belize, and trips are very iffy I've heard. It sounds like an appealing adventure, but not a small trip at all. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banco_Chinchorro
