Hi

Am thinking of heading to Komodo in September. Is this a good time to go?

Is there any problem getting to all the dive sites (inc the southern ones)? Also is it good for sightings of Mantas etc?

All info much appreciated

Cheers

john

September is a good time frame. The only time of the year the dive site manta alley there are no mantas is late october to late november. Sometimes they are found at the dive site makassar but sometimes they just disappear for a month.

One of the best times to go, we always do our trips there in Sept or Oct each year, a lot of the boats have moved toward Raja by the end of Sept so the sites aren't as busy as it would be in August. Also, the weather in the South has typically calmed down by then so can pretty much guarantee a trip to Horseshoe Bay and Manta Alley (note I said "pretty much" :) ) We still have space on our trip starting on 25 Sept on the Ambai if you are interested, please send me a PM

The Amira has a couple of interesting trips with limited space in September, both $6195 USD plus fees for 14 nights. This is the published rate and we discount these trips.

I've seen loads of manta's the last two years at Manta Alley during early November. In 2013 there was so many you couldn't count them all. At one point I was in the alley itself and I could count 12 just hanging in the current all around me, there were more that I couldn't count as the vis was at about 10-13 meters. In 2014 there weren't as many, we had problem with other divers not following good practices and hovering way above the cleaning station or swimming twords them, causing them to scatter. Once they were out of the water the Manta's started to come back and run in trains around the "island". 2014 wasn't as epic as 2013 and it goes to show you proper diver behavior has a big affect on what the Manta's do.

In late October 2011 I celebrated a memorable big birthday with my husband , our guide and 20 Mantas ! Perhaps we were just lucky.
