Either in the "manufacturers" section, or perhaps a new "dive software" sub forum. I think a Dive Software forum would be good, as questions about other software such as v-planner could be addressed there.

I'd be happy to support questions in such a dive software forum. Right now I just search for subsurface and try to provide help, having a place like this would be great, I'd consider using that instead of our own forum...

Hello dirkhh,

I gave up on trying to get the files transferred from Oceanic's logbook to Subsurface. As I said, there are hundreds of them dating from 2007. I do like Subsurface much better, but it is not an option for my Oceanic Veo 250.

However, Subsurface is performing very well for my Suunto VYTEC transferred files. I really liked this, as I have been able to correct the dates (2015 & 2025 & 2000 - caused by battery & time zone changes) to their proper dates.

Please let me know if you ever can get my Oceanic Logbook files transferred over (I'll send you a copy of my files :) ).

But right now I'm happy with Subsurface as my Suunto VYTEC logbook.

Thank you again for your help.

p.s. Portland? - do you ever make it to Newport? I was spearfishing Yaquina Bay's South Jetty last Friday - cooked up fish for my 93 year old Dad that evening. :)
The (Waldport) Alsea Crab Hole is the destination for this weekend - if the rock path is not frozen!!!
Come on down and talk to Joe at South Beach Scuba/1 mile South of Yaquina Bay Bridge.

dirkhh,

Our Old 19yr old Cat is got us awake early - thought I'd tell you why I'm up at 4:30am :)

So - I downloaded from the Oceanic Veo 250 - here are some comments

1. Downloaded them quickly
2. Subsurface downloaded the correct date, but wrong year (and wrong day-name, but will be corrected when I correct the year)
3. I am very glad that I did not download them into the existing file - I would have had to go searching for the incorrect dated ones :(
4. You map is fun, but very very buggy !!!!
5. When I downloaded them into a new file, it was very unclear how to name the new file - when I gave up and tried to leave - there it was and I name it Veo250 :)
6. It was fun toggling between the Oceanic Veo 250 & Sunnto Vytec profiles. (Oceanic's temp is right on, Suunto's depth is right on - both are within 2degrees and 2feet of each other)
7. There were only 45 files on my Veo250 and I downloaded all of them (now I know how many the Oceanic holds)
- and I was very happy that the #1 file was my last dive in the Gulf of Thailand, April 22, 2011 (oops - I mean 2014) !!! :)
8. Of course, if I had of done this a month ago, I would have all my Thailand Dives.
9. I'm still waiting for you to ask me for a copy of my OceanicLog - so you can make them Subsurface friendly :)
10. Thank you again

A point of clarification in case it's not clear at this point (); subsurface is an open source project. This means the developers (Dirk and others) do this work in their spare time out of love for the technology. There is no market or company, just a community of people using and developing it, trying to make it better.

It is appropriate to thank them for their work as that is one if the only payments they receive. The other, of course, is the satisfaction of a job well done.

Thanks subsurface team!

Hello dirkhh,

So let's fix that. Please send me the logbook (ideally all of it, exported as TXT with comma separation) to dirk at hohndel dot org
Let me know if I'm allowed to share the logbook with our lead developer working on the import function - that would much increase the likelihood that we can get this resolved quickly :)

Good.

I prefer to take pictures of sea creatures, not kill them. And I haven't hat a chance to dive in Newport, yet.

So - I downloaded from the Oceanic Veo 250 - here are some comments

1. Downloaded them quickly
2. Subsurface downloaded the correct date, but wrong year (and wrong day-name, but will be corrected when I correct the year)
That's interesting. Is the year correct on the dive computer? If yes, I'd love a dump file (you can select that in the download dialog). Oceanic has a positively bizarre encoding of the dive date in the download, and it's different for every model. We might need to tweak something in the code for the Veo250 and with the dump file (and the correct dates for the dives) I should be able to figure this out.
3. I am very glad that I did not download them into the existing file - I would have had to go searching for the incorrect dated ones :(
Agreed, that's kind of a pain.
4. You map is fun, but very very buggy !!!!
There are a couple of known issues there. Would you mind explaining what doesn't work as you expected?
5. When I downloaded them into a new file, it was very unclear how to name the new file - when I gave up and tried to leave - there it was and I name it Veo250 :)
maybe we need to document this better... you don't name it until you save it. Either at exit, or with Ctrl-Shift-S
6. It was fun toggling between the Oceanic Veo 250 & Sunnto Vytec profiles. (Oceanic's temp is right on, Suunto's depth is right on - both are within 2degrees and 2feet of each other)

It's hard to get the word out about something like Subsurface. Zero marketing budget, all volunteer work... many "geek divers" know about it - but outside the open source / high tech crowd it's hard. Spread the word... actually, having a forum here might be a good way to do so. I'll work on figuring out how to do that, next :)
9. I'm still waiting for you to ask me for a copy of my OceanicLog - so you can make them Subsurface friendly :)
10. Thank you again
Did that above. I'm waiting to receive your file and make things work for you...

Dear dirkhh,

WOW - Thank you !!!!

I'm running off to work now, but will send the files to you this evening.
Actually, I'm a bit late for work - I've been playing with Subsurface. :)

Thank you again.

dirkhh,

Dirkhh,

About the TXT w/comma. There are 400dives and it looks like using the TXT transfer option that I'd have to do each one separate, plus it didn't seem to work as it said "transferred" when I did my 2 most recent dives, but I couldn't figure out where they transferred them.

Anyways, I emailed you 40 out of 192 files. Each file has 1 to 6 dives in it, so I guess there are about 400+ dives altogether. I sent you about 80 dives. I hope you can use the form that I sent you. When you are ready, I will send you the rest of the Oceanic Veo 250 files.

About the buggy map. It's just hard to make sit still. Every time the mouse gets near it, it jumps all around and zooms in and out and it's hard to get the flag exact. This is when I select the Globe for full screen. Also, once you get somthing labeled, you might want to go back and take a look, but if you are not careful, you will move the flag again.

Oh, how do you "BACK-UP" Subsurface to my 128GB USB Flashdrive. After all this work (play?) I would hate to lose anything.

Thank you,
drdaddy

the Subsurface log files are where you want when you save them.
Easy to backup, just copy them.

don't forget : an USB flashdrive is not a backup device, it can fail.

DuboisP,
I've read this over and over about the USB not being a backup device. I do use an USB flashdrive for a backup device. I have a number of high capacity ones like 128gh and 64gb. Are they not safe? What would you recommend?
drdaddy
p.s. Thank you for the note about Subsurface backup - "just copy them"
