forced to go this route in sept; plan to have 2 carry-on and two checked but may need a med sized third checked: is this allowed as long as u pay the $3 plus tax per pound over 44lbs? what about a small light weight bac pac in addition to the carry-on? do they hold u to the 11# weight limit on the carry-on? thanks

The bus/ferry option is worth considering.

I know when we come down all the luggage and regular carryons get checked. All of them get aggregated for your group. I do carry my small back pack. They have never weighed it but we are never near the limits. There is simply no room in the cabin for a regular carry on. Occasionally they cut some people some slack but they can be strict too. Had a friend ask for his ticket price back because he was going to take the ferry instead. They cut the overage fee a bit.

The bus/ferry option is worth considering.

And if you have a couple people in your party, the private van beats the bus hands down. Unless you really like 50 minutes of a movie in Spanish....

The bus / ferry option is easy. I've done it a couple of times. With regards to the movie playing in Spanish, you are visiting a Spanish speaking country. It's a scenic drive and goes quickly

During the off season I travel home on Tuesdays and do the bag drag to Cancun. Lazy morning with a good breakfast, catch the 9 AM ferry to playa, walk 2 1/2 blocks to the ADO bus terminal and arrive at the CUN airport at about 11:30. If I need a movie In English, I would play one off my tablet (downloaded from Pirate bay).
No problem.

Wow, guys. Don't be so serious. And maybe I like movies in Spanish but I just don't like only 50 minutes of them, especially 50 minutes in the middle. Maybe I like no movie and more window to enjoy the ride?

And pirated movies through Aduana? I don't know if that is covered in your personal allowances. Are you pirating them in Spanish or English?

With 4 people or so traveling together:

1. My van guy is just as cheap as the bus, and;
2. The bus doesn't stop at Oxxo for beer.

I just took 13 down and the vans were much cheaper AND I needed to apply that beer early and often to keep the cats in line.

I have done the bus. It's fine. However, I like the vans. I also pay a couple extra bucks for the exit row on the plane when possible and I usually upgrade my tequila from rail. YMMV....

thanks for the info: only my wife and I are traveling/mayair website says any carryon must fit under seat-no prob since we use the small lightweight nylon rolling duffels by ASAKS (for regs/comps/camera): really don't want that bag checked since the soft nylon provides zero protection ; have done the bag drag- just thot we'd try something different since we "have" to fly into cancun this trip/actually will be doing the reverse drag since after 10 days in coz we r spending 4 days in playa visiting friends and r flying back from camcum; thanks again

The only thing I carry on is the backback. However, my toughbook is in my rolly carryon. I tell them 'fragile.' (I actually say it badly in Spanish, since it is a Spanish speaking country....) I actually observe them treat the back differently. It doesn't go on the belt with the rest and they tag it and all. They wheel them out to the plane which is at baggage cart height, so there is no throwing up or down. In Cancun, the luggage on the cart now follows you all the way to the transfer van. They used to return it in the FBO waiting area. Anyway you 'see' it the whole way.

I would NOT check my bag with the toughbook in the pocket on a 'regular' airline, but I do it without concern on Mayair.

Canada Transfers to Playacar Palace (close enough to ferry) is $64 one way.

The ADO bus would be 584 pesos for four adults or roughly $48. At some point it become cheaper to take a private service versus the ADO bus. Convenience or other factors may still have a person take a private transfer even if not the cheapest way.

For one or two people, the ADO bus is a good option.
