Effective immediately Scubaboard has changed its policy regarding advertisements.

In order to allow commercial users to reach their target audience, *relevant* advertisements will now be allowed in all forums where the top-level forum does not have a marketplace.

This is not allowing spam. If users see advertisements that are *not* relevant in the context of the given forum then we ask you to report them.

?? seems like a can of worms ??

An "advertiser" means a paid SB account I assume. If an advertiser posts a solicitation in a thread, are members also allowed to comment in the threads?

Sounds like some 'splainin might be in order here.

I'll invite Pete to join this thread. As I understand it, the idea is to allow commercial users more leeway with respect to posting relevant advertising.

Where and how will that advertising appear? Can it be a post in a thread? Can it be the start of a thread?

These aren't "advertisements" rather but threads with offerings in them. This isn't "new" either: it's been that way since we deleted a ton of of the "Trips and Marketplaces" sub forums a year or so ago.

Here's the problem, we've grown to where trying to find your way around can be confusing. Getting rid of those sub forums really simplified life. This applies not only to businesses, but to non-commercial entities as well. If you have a trip you're organizing, post it in the geographical area that makes the best sense. The same goes with gear, classes and anything else that might be of geographical interest. We do suggest that you keep any such offerings to only once a week or so no matter who you are. If ScubaBoardians think you're only here to sell, you'll probably piss them off more than entice them. Use your discretion. There shouldn't be any commercial threads in our "Green Zones" or if it already has a market place. If a business wants to advertise in there then they are going to have to buy banner ads to do so.

Sort of like what Beaverdiver does? Hopefully other's skin will be a thick as bd's. I suspect it may get the thread count up.

What we may need is a DVR for Scubaboard so we can fast forward through the BS. Ooh, maybe we have that - the ignore function.

Part of the magic of ScubaBoard is that our users get to interact with Scuba professionals. If a business is spamming (more than what you think is acceptable) then please PM them about it or simply hit the Report button and let us handle it. The last thing any business would want to do would be to alienate their target market. Some have this figured out while others are trying their hardest to do so. It's easy to malign someone who makes a mistake, it's altogether kind to help them see how they affect you. Just be sincere, gentle and patient. Think how others were patient with you at one time.

So are self-serving, advertising posts going to be allowed now? e.g. http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/hot-deals/477186-mikaela-shiffin-eagle-vail-co-native-congrats.html

Can you be more specific as to what is not allowable?
