I have my DAN insurance :), but I don't have a dive buddy or my own equipment yet (bc, reg, dive computer). Is it ok to assume that I will find a buddy or buddies once I am there, or should I do something now? Regarding equipment, does anyone know what the rental equipment condition is at AKR or weekly cost? I'd really like to have a bit more experience before I purchase my own kit, but I would make the investment before Roatan if it makes sense.

Thanks,
finbird

Mask, Fins & Snorkel: Daily $8.00, Weekly $40.00
Mask & Snorkel: Daily $5.00, Weekly $25.00
Fins: Daily $5.00, Weekly $25.00
BC Jacket: Daily $12.00, Weekly $60.00
Regulator w/Console and alternate air source: Daily $10.00, Weekly $50.00
Dive computer: Daily $10.00, Weekly $50.00
Regulator with computer: Daily $16.00, Weekly $80.00
Wet Suit (Full): Daily $10.00, Weekly $50.00
Wet Suit (Shorty): Daily $8.00, Weekly $40.00

IMHO, I would buy mask, open foot fins, snorkel, neoprene boots, full 3mm wetsuit (stretchy kind), & basic nitrox dive computer. Rent BC/Regulator unless you go to a dive shop and get to check out different styles.

I'm sure you can get some good suggestions on here if you want to purchase. We have simple dive gear that was $. You will find folks on here who paid $$$$$. You just have to figure out where you want to fit. Danny got my gear at https://www.scubatoys.com/‎; you just call them and let them know what you need and they can put together a nice package. My dive computer was ordered from LeisurePro.com on closeout. Amazon has some basic items.

edit to add:
Rental fins tend to be full foot fins that gave my family terrible blisters.

+1

My first trip was without any gear, and those full foot fins chewed up my feet like no tomorrow. Especially worse if you get a little bit of sand mixed in it as well.

The next dive trip, I brought the above, and couldn't be happier.

My only hurdle at this moment, is bring my drysuit along with my shorty? And risk overheating getting ready to get in the water...... (I really enjoy diving dry, and besides, my tuxedo would be dry when I take it off)

Water temp was 81 last week in Utila... I'm sure Roatan is about the same, since they're right next door to each other...

Very warm water! You don't need a drysuit!

I realize that, I was diving in swim trunks a few months ago in PR :) ..... I was getting cold around 70 minutes.

I just really like the novelty of not being soaked after a dive, and to get more usage out of it before doing more training up here in frozen waters.

I might just bring it for some evening or early morning dives.

Weight and space are items of interest to traveling divers. Unless you're fine carrying and paying for extra baggage, I wouldn't bother with the drysuit in Roatan. My wife and I did two weeks in Roatan late October-early November. I was in a skin 100% of the time, she was in a 1 mm. I'm pretty cold tolerant, she is the opposite. Additionally you'll have the minor annoyance of stowing the drysuit inflator hose when diving wet, or the bother of adding/removing the hose. If you are anything like me, you'll be drenched after diving dry in Roatan...from sweat. Yuck. One of the things I love about warm water diving is getting to ditch the heavier gear.

If nothing else, get your own mask. Price is relatively meaningless, fit is a huge #1 concern. I recommend the folding pocket snorkels. Many experienced divers don't use snorkels. Having one stowed in a BC pocket is a good back-up plan for me.

Having your own computer avoids learning a different model's peculiarities. The Suunto Zoop is an excellent basic Nitrox capable computer. If you haven't signed up for the free Invasion Nitrox training, I highly recommend you do.
