Midge - from my understanding - the FINES were waived because it's evident that she did not install the device. The money owed is for estimated consumption since she purchased the hotel that was not paid for (not her fault, but the electricity was consumed) - so she is not being sanctioned for the device, just being required to pay for electricity that was used.

As far as price increases - just fair warning to everyone - expect to see price increases for next year from everyone. Our sales tax is going up to 16% starting Jan. 1, electricity has increased, and gasoline, which is our largest expense for the boats constantly increases - it never fluctuates, only goes up systematically at the beginning of every month. The tax, electric, and gas increases causes ALL of our operating expenses to go up so price increases are imminent.

We have increased costs and inflation here just as every other community in the world.

It is called a "Diablo" - and it's a magnet of some sort that slows down the meter. They used to be very common here when there was no regulation or monitoring by the electric company. This is why it was not caught before and also further evidence in Eva's favor that this device has been there for YEARS installed by one of the previous owners of the hotel - probably all the way back to BEFORE the Blue Angel days (pre-Alejandra).
I have my suspicions as to whodunnit. We have been patrons of that hotel since the second year it was open (~1982), through several owners, and I got to know them all. I don't think it was Javier and Emma (the original owners), and I don't think it was Alejandra.

Ding, ding, ding Gordon! We are on the same page :)

That's so sad, I feel horrible for Eva :crying2: My first thought is "How corrupt can you be?"... but then I think, Edison might try to do the same thing here. You might stand a better legal chance fighting it here though. Any which way, It sucks seeing things like this happen to nice people.

Who is being corrupt? If you have a device in your electric meter that makes it look like you are using less electricity than you really are, and the utility company finds it, the utility is going to take measures to try to recoup their losses, no matter where you are. Eva is a friend of mine and I hate to see this happen, and it has been established that she didn't install the device or even know it was there, but the electric company isn't the bad guy, either.

You would like to think so, but it often they just write it off, sadly, and let the rest of us pay for it.

If hotel rates are raised because of this then future guests are paying for previous guests' electricity use.
