yes, my confusion is that some sites sell the "classic" second stage as D1. So the question is what are the differences between this new Zenith second stage and the Classic second stage, or is it just a question of the Zenith replacing the Classic?

Soooooo....how the confusion started. In the beginning, Chris had the D1 First stage. "D" stands for Diaphragm. He then had the Second stage, and only called it a Second stage, with no real name. We ended up just calling it the D1 Second stage, to give it a name. Well, that was when Hog was smaller, and fewer dealers, so it didn't matter.

Chris finally, gave them names with his last pricelist. On our site, and from branding, so many people new it as a D1 second stage, so we left it as is. That is also why DGE only calls it a Hog Second Stage  from when they came on to Hog as a dealer, later.

Hope that makes sense....we LOVE the fact of everyone calling it a D1 second stage, as we branded it that. So keep calling it that so Chris can keep shaking his head at us

yes and no...the classic will still be around in combos and such. The Zenith is the new headliner so to speak

I picked up 4 sets of these from DRIS. Fantastic service as always from DRIS! I had a large order and some of it was back-ordered and DRIS was extremely helpful in getting the Hogs out to me so I could dive them on my trip.

They performed great and love the new look! I have a set of the special editions already but the intro promo DRIS had was too good to pass up and made it easy excuse to upgrade :D

The weather didn't cooperate so several dives were canceled but started to clear up near the end of the week. Very happy with the D3 performance. They breathed really well at depth with really good flow and "ease of breathing"! Thanks to Hog and DRIS!

I am thinking about "breaking up" wiith ScubaPro for being like a bad girlfriend- just too needy, takes all my money, high maintenance, and way too controlling.
So are service kits readily available to end users like previous Hogs? What exactly is the 1st stage made of? What is the black coating? How does hold up?

First stage looks to be aluminum with a Type III hard anodizing (Chris, please correct me if I'm wrong) on the main body, with chrome plated accents - I've bashed mine around quite a bit already and they've yet to show much for wear. My biggest concern with the unit is putting a hole in the flexible rubber where the environmental seal sits (the hog logo on the 1st stage), but aside from that these are pretty well bulletproof.

The first stage is brass with black chrome. The accents are Trivalent chrome(same chrome as the D1). I REALLY dont understadn the hole in th esilicone env. seal disc comment, there should not be a hole there. Can you PM me what you mean?

Still waiting for an answer to this.

the cover, and some very slight internal changes to the case, but other than that they are the same. Same guts, same parts kit etc. Less of a change as when Apeks changed the ATX to the XTX, minor cosmetic differences, but the guts are all but identical. Service is the same, parts are the same, breathing is the same, just a new sexy front cover, and that's about it.
