Dear All,
I just become a TDI diver - Deco Procedures - and need to acquire gear as I have none. I actually never bought diving gear.

I am working in Cairo and will be diving the Red Sea - no surprise. I will be back in the UK for a short visit between the 16th and the 24th of May. I will have the chance to buy gear then. I am happy to buy either new or used with little wear. I will be based in Staines-upon-Thames, near Heathrow, during my visit.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thank you.

Check out amphibian sports in west Norwood. If you won't have access to a car, Take southwest trains to Clapham junction and switch to the southern line towards Sutton, get off at west Norwood. It's probably a 10 minute walk from the station.

eBay normally contains a treasure-trove of tech gear. It's worth a browse.

What sort of gear are you looking for? DIR/hogarthian etc? The cheaper deals tend to come from online retailers...

That shop looks good and I will most probably visit it when I am back in the UK.

As far as for what shall I buy, I asked my instructor to give me a quote - he has contacts and he is a importer as well. Based on that I will do a search on the old "flea-bay"...

However, what I am concern is in avoiding buying something unsuitable, only to have to invest more money in something just marginally better, but that was missing a fundamental feature.

So, no starter packs for me. The real thing... I don't have a budget but the £2000 figure comes to mind... Is that short? How much more do I need? No tanks or weights for me at this stage.

Suitable is determined by your own approach/philosophy...and likely to be shaped significantly by what you were taught...and the peer group you will subsequently dive with.

What were you taught regards equipment configuration approaches?

How did you make it all the way to Deco Procedures in rental gear? That's got to be some sort of record.

£2k. Easy.

Regs. A couple of APEKS DS4s will run you £169ish each. Actually get a 3rd as a stage Reg
Long Hose £30
Red Sea? Ally Backplate. Get and IST one that will run you around £60.
Webbing for the Harness. You can get ready made kits or make your own. Price isn't that much different, maybe £40
Decent Wing. Splash and get Halcyon Evolve and your into the £450 range.
A couple of Uwatec Timers about £100 each

Assuming you don't need any extra exposure protection you should be well under your 2k budget.

There's a few more bits and bobs, slates, SMBs etc. But as a basic list its ok.

Fairly Standard for ANDP on this side of the Globe. Some people do courses abroad and don't have the Baggage Allowance to take all kit. Others want to sample deco courses without the kit cost burden. In the UK people have their own kit, but Egypt, Asia etc tourists rent for courses.

Amphibian is a good choice - what I suggest you do is give Jim a phone call.
Stewarts list is a good one though make sure your backplate is going to fit your choice of wing.

Stewart - don't know if you've come across Jim but he's excellent to deal with - a top bloke.

I've got Aquanauts 10 minutes walk from house in Plymouth so I use them a lot.

Otherwise Divelife normally have the best deals.

Fair enough using rental kit for the courses..... but not having a very clear idea on kit preferences/philosophy after the course/s??
