We are arguing the same point....

Use the purge. I don't care. I don't. It doesn't make me right or you wrong.

The point here is that the assumption was made initially that one approach was the answer over the other based on this incident.

Yes I can do both. While maskless, in a black out situation, and staying in trim while under control of my buoyancy
how about naked,under the ice,while inverted?????lol!!!!

I've dove inverted, under ice, and almost naked. But not at the same time.....
My point was practice task loading. Push your boundaries (within safe confines) and figure out how to cope with it.

Thanks for all the info.

I was taught in OW how to breath over the water and also how to breathe off a free flowing reg. I guess what I didn't get was what the preferred method was when switching regs. I always just did the breath blow to avoid shooting water down my throat and I was used to it from snorkeling.

I f you had been taught "back then" you would have practiced literally HUNDREDS of time the regulator switch, because that is what happens on each cycle of buddy breathing... You should get someone to teach you how to breath from a damaged or badly leaking regulator.. another potentially useful skill..

Very true indeed! Buddy breathing also teaches you to not panic when the reg is not in your mouth. Too many people hit the panic button when a reg gets kicked out of their mouth or a switch go bad, then hold their breath, etc... You have plenty of time to recover if you don't panic. When you give the 2nd to your buddy, you build up trust with the buddy that he will give it back. You build up trust with your body and learn you can slowly blow small bubbles to confirm your airway is open for some time. You need enough practice to make all this automatic, not something you have to think through.

Here's a trick I was taught in O/W.... Place a flooded reg in your mouth and rapidly stick your tongue in and out like you are (nevermind ). Take a breath and it will be purged.

And all the while inhaling water and choking it down without your dive buddies knowing!

If you were trained old school you would breath off the low pressure inflator while your OOA dive buddies used your primary and octo :D

Old school did not have power inflators nor octopus regulators?

I wasn't trained 'old school'. I've just been selective on my instructors on my advanced training. My point on sucking water down is that I was able to manage the issue without flipping out. It was no more of a big deal than getting a drink down the wrong pipe at the dinner table.

I could breathe off an LP, but its a bacteria factory so I think I'll pass...

I think my life/dive partner should practice this technique!

So 00wabbit, you should learn all the options and decide which technique is best for you and your unique diving needs. Then practice, practice, practice.
