I'm going to Cozumel for the first time in December/13 and have been "lurking" here for a few weeks now. Anyhow, I had to register and ask................a friend dove with Caribbean Divers and recommended them to me. I can't find any reference here about them and am wondering why. Does anyone have any experience with them? Thanks! and sorry for the lurking

Their website seems sparse.

Here is another:

Caribbean Divers - Cozumel, Mexico

What are you looking for in a dive op/dive experience and does that dive op meet those requirements?

I agree and site looks really "dated" to me. Prefer small boats and hopefully 2 so that groups can be set according to ability, dive my tank and not concerned with towels/robes etc being provided.

There are tons of dive ops in Cozumel, and I know plenty of people who have been very happy diving with ops other than the small percentage of the islands' dive operators that are mentioned regularly on this forum. The majority of divers who go to Cozumel never read or participate in scubaboard (blashphemy!) If you trust your friends' opinion and think the reasons they liked Caribbean divers things that are important to you, I'd go with that vs. the opinions of a bunch of strangers on the internet. Then again, I'm here answering this, so who knows if that's true ;)

Aldora Divers. Go with them.

By "dive my tank" do you expect to be able to make a 90 minute dive when the others are done at 50 minutes?

Have you contacted Caribbean to see if they have at least two boats and will allow you to "dive your tank?"

One point to consider is that even if they have two or more boats, if they do not have enough people, all will be on one boat and that trip to Barracuda or Devil's Throat probably won't happen.

December is a busy time for all operations. Whoever you choose, do not wait till the last minute and expect seat(s) on anyone's boat.
I've not seen nor heard of the op you are contemplating. I've dove with the same op since 1999 once or twice a year and never felt the need to change. Myself, like most are very loyal to their favorite op. Where you stay can steer you towards an op as well. The diving is normally great. Unfortunately, there can be a norte at that time of year. If they close the port you can dive the cenotes on the mainland or dive with Aldora on the east side. Wait it it out on land is the final option.

PeterNBiddle, you are being a cheerleader - own it and embrace it. I also really like Aldora, but just cheerleading for Aldora without giving the reasons why provides no useful information at all to other readers. Divers have all sorts of things they are looking for in Dive Ops, and different divers have different priorities. Aldora is a high-price, high service valet operator. To me, it's worth the price, but others may be looking for something different. My own reasons for liking Aldora are: (1) HP Steel 120 tanks - I tend to suck air after no diving for 6-8 months, and the extra air means I don't have to worry about cutting other divers' short by having to come up. I also really like the bouyancy characteristics of the Steel tanks; AL tanks will get positively bouyant at 500-700 psi, so I need extra weight to do a comfortable safety stop; not a problem with Steel; (2) small, fast 6-pack boats - get out to the reefs early to avoid the rush; (3) long Surface Interval on the beach, more outgassing, longer second dive; (4) everyone dives computers - that, with higher capacity tanks, means lots of bottom time on each dive; while Aldora charges more than most Ops for a two-tank dive, but on a dollar per bottom time minute basis, it is probably about even; (5) valet service - I really like dropping my gear off with Aldora at the beginning of a trip and not worrying about it til I'm ready to go home, letting someone else do all the set-up work, rinsing, etc. I know some divers are a bit anal (and I don't mean that in a derogatory way at all) about doing their own gear set up before a dive, but that's not me.

BTW, while Aldora is my favorite, I've also done many dives with Dive With Martin, and I've been generally very happy with DWM. I'm sure there are other operators on Coz that are excellent, but I have no personal experience, so I won't comment.
