Well, I guess that depend on the op. If you blow through a tank in 20 minutes, there is shade and snacks. And the Capitan is entertaining. We will be along to join you. We dive our tanks. As for fair, you got the same tank I did with the promise you can dive it as long as you want or can. If you 'prematurely empty your tank' and don't want to sit on the boat, go with a time limited op. Coz has something for everyone.

That being said, I used to be the guy on the boat early. That time sitting on the boat was instructive and convinced me I need to get my air consumption together.

That was describing me my first several years of diving...a trip to Thailand on a Liveaboar and constantly being the first one up truly was motivating for me to get my air consumption under control. :)

Blowing through your air in 20 minutes is different than having the other five customer divers being ready to surface in 50 minutes and the one customer diver can go another 30 minutes. Will the DM end the dive or send the five up and continue with the one?

Oooo…good distinction.

Will the DM end the dive or send the five up and continue with the one?

Send 5 up and stay with the remaining diver or end the dive. Now there is a conundrum that can be debated on both sides.

What part does the buddy system play?

How does the weather play a part?

Do you cater to the five or to the one?

Does the other customers even care...or care enough to speak up?

What are the ethical considerations of spliting a dive group?

What were the expectations prior to the dive?

I am sure there are many, MANY, other considerations to be thought thru.

Seems like a reasonable question to me, and yes this is the typical pattern of events. My experience with a few of the dive ops and DM's is that they keep an eye on you, see if you can follow direction and be reasonably safe with good buoyancy, so they want you to stay with and dive with their group, so let them know that you want to dive your tank as long as your computer profile is in agreement. After the first day of diving they will probably let you and your buddy dive your tank. If you want to be embarrassed look at your DM's starting and ending tank pressure. Look at the bright side your on vacation, hope the people on the dive boat brought a good book, or better yet your helping people by giving them more time on-board the boat to complete their Scubaboard dive report. and can start writing in their dive log book.

Classic thread in Coz Forum:
-someone asks a question about a dive op
-folks begin to chime in about their favorite op
-argument ensues
-conversation turns to pee and farts
-argument ensues
-a couple people try to get thread back to original question by OP with some success (results still to be determined)

... and I wouldn't have it any other way!
