I'm trying to find out who makes the best Cold Water regs. What reg is hands down "THE BEST"! What Reg is most Cost Effective Cold Water Reg? Which Regs are all hype, or simply overpriced?

Lots of regs are rated for cold water. The best is purely subjective. I've used the Sherwood Blizzard, Oceanic CDX5, FDX10, and DX4 with an envirokit. Now I only use HOG's for cold water. See my avatar. That's under the ice. And all of them performed flawlessly for me. But I also setup, serviced, and tuned them for ice diving myself.

but for the average buyer, who doesnt have the skills or know how to service or tweak them to the conditions. is the HOG with cold water kit sufficient? how about apex or scuba pro

If I am not mistaken, after the death of two USCG divers in arctic waters due to regs freezing up they did significant testing. The reg that approved for their dives in cold water was the Oceanic FDX 10. I have both a HOG cold water set and an FDX 10 set, I feel confident in the performance of both.

IMO, yes. As for Apeks and SP, both have regs rated for cold water. And they need to be set up right as well.

And it's not just the reg itself. There are techniques for cold water that help as well. It also depends on how cold the water is.

In cold water I dive the scubapro mk17 with s600 I have never had a problem with them at all. They breath nice at all depths and temp I have used them in 33 degrees ice can not get in side of them at all to lock them up

I would trust most of the "major players" that have specific "cold water" regs. As Jim said, it still needs to be tuned correctly to function correct.

I dive SP MK-17/G250V or w/ a BA156 in the deep water of the Great Lakes where temps are in the 30's. I have also dove the MK-10 there too, and without problem. I attribute it to proper tuning....

...and proper techniquie,as jim said!!!
if you try hard enough, you can mess up any reg!!!!!!

it's a shoppers paradise!!!
i'm using an old sp109 2nd with a conshelf 1st personally
my buddys using hogs and they breathe great!!
when i get bigger,i may get 2 of them myself!!!
have fun
dive safe
