Potentially fatal assumption.

If you have a good dive where you pay attention to your air, your depth, ascend at a slow rate, make your safety stop, pay attention when you are diving the alarms will never go off. Your depth, deco and low air alarm should never go off these are things that you should always keep your eye on.
Not sure which of the above quotes is your recommendation for computer diving...
The OP says sometimes he can't hear the alarms, for those he misses he will see them when gets home and hopefully watch for those things on his next dive.
Sorry to provide distracting, unsolicited and off-topic advice. Here's my answer to the OP's question: No, I don't have that problem with my Cobra or with my other Suunto computers. Hope that helps...
Thanks

Yes, but that's very different from what you said before - "No beeping means you must be doing things right".

If you have a good dive, you will not hear your alarm going off.

If you do not hear your alarm going off, that does NOT mean that you had a good dive.

I guess we are just seeing things differently. For whatever it's worth, I'm trying to be helpful.

Let me ask you, if price was not an issue, would it be ideal for every new diver to have a divemaster with him who would monitor his depth, time and tank pressure? Why not? What would be wrong with a little help until you gain experience?

I'm obviously not saying that if you rely on your computer alarm, you are going to die. There are many ways of diving, and many considerations. What I am trying to get across is that an audible alarm is a gear solution to a skills problem. If that sentence sounds familiar, it is because it comes up all the time here on scubaboard. Yes, some things do require technical fixes, but situational awareness is not one of them. The way to fix a skills problem is to do it the right way, right from the beginning.

my first computer : beep always off
my second computer : beep always off
my third computer : beep cannot be off, because beeper doesn't exist :)

Guys! I am just trying to see if my Cobra 3 is defective or not. I just need to know how common it is to NOT hear these things underwater. My beep makes the beep - but it is just very quiet underwater.

ScubaSteve apparently has the same problem. Who else has the same issue, so that I know that this is just how they are, and I do not need to take my Cobra 3 back!

I recommend turning the audible alarms off to conserve battery power, not to mention the reasons others noted. Being in a group of divers with everyone's computer beeping now and then can be quite annoying. Every time I heard a beep I looked at my own computer, but it was usually someone else's.

I have an original Cobra and could never hear the thing beep. Sometimes I will end a dive in the shallows and take a tank down quite a ways muck diving at which point I knew it was beeping......I agree with what has been said. A beeping alarm that you need to hear is a crutch for poor planning and execution. Turn it off and plan/execute your dives. Pay close attention to everything that you should and alarms will never need to be heard.

You should be able to go back to the site that you did your OW and dive with a buddy from your class or anyone else certified. without a divemaster. If your going out to the ocean for the first time, your first boat dive, or any other conditions that may be new to you, you should hire a guide. As I said in previous post, there are things you should always monitor! (your depth, pressure, dive time, deco time) You should never depend on someone or some beep to monitor these for you. I'm talking the little things that most new divers have trouble with, like controlling their buoyancy, maintaining a safety stop, ascending to fast. I've only had mine to beep for 2 reasons (ascending to fast, and at 500psi your airtime drops to 0, but when this happens, I'm on my safety stop.)

I realize the way I stated about the alarm not going of could be interpreted the wrong way.

And when I say look at your PC, you can see dives that you may have had problems on and figure out what you were doing wrong so you can work on it. Hopefully as you dive more the only thing you will use your computer for is an electronic log book. You won't have to turn off the alarms, because it will not have a reason to alarm.

Anyone else?

Your computer is not faulty, you just don't hear the beep like many other new divers. There might be many reasons for this. I believe you are not aware of things around you when you dive and not focused on what you are doing. This might be due to a lack of diving experience. Relax, dive and check you depth/pressure on a regular basis. If you do want to set an alarm (only one), set an alarm for depth!

PS: Do you hear the ascent rate alarm while you dive??

I really have heard no beeps underwater, but maybe I haven't ascended too fast yet.
