I agree on the taking the OW course again as well. Not that I have tons of experience but having just gone through it myself I would think that in 20 years there has been numerous changes that would benefit you. Good luck in which ever route you choose and have fun diving.

=Joe the plumber;6441022]Hello all, PADI certified in 1993 but have not been since I was certified. Was looking to do refresher and I checked a few local places and the want $129-199. I see PADI does online refresher for $55 but of course will not have a in water dive. So opinions to take online course and then do my own dive or charter a dive? I live in the Jupiter,FL area and I can do some shallow dives first.
Do the entire ow course over..Too long a period of time has gone by. Not only has gear changed but you have changed, now much older and body/strength changes.

Also nitrox certification the dive shops want $199 which sounds like a lot to me for a course that is really just academics? I found this place online Online Nitrox Certification - Scubagclid=CKfqrtzq07ECFc2a7Qodv0sAjw $79.95 for course. Will I have any trouble getting tanks filled with online course? The problem for me is I need to possibly buy some new equipment and with the price of these dive shop courses and the gear it is getting up there.
stay away from that SDA course .It is not recognized anywhere.Just walk into any LDS and they will tell you. It is a scam..PADI has on every Undersea Journal (magazine) a statement that any certification from this guy is considered to be invalid.

I join the every expanding chorus that it best to retake the OW course. But if you opt for a refresher only, then do some open water dives afterward with a current and insured DM. Nothing to add on nitrox. It can wait until you are once again competent in the water.

I came back after 10 years and it took more than the refresher to get comfortable again.

I did refresher + nitrox + a ton of plinking around a pool + 5 o/w dives before I started to feel ok.

SCUBA diving is not like riding a bike.

Thanks for the replies. I found a local shop I think I am going to use. Going to do refresher and nitrox through them. Also going to do ocean dives with them. I can respect every ones opinions on taking the whole course again but don't feel this is a must. I have (and do) snorkel and free dive quite a bit. And believe it or not I do remember some of what was taught. Just need to refresh on tables and such. Thanks again, Joe

Good luck Joe...keep us up to date on how you are doing.

One thing I always say is "You don't know what you don't know".

Before you drop any more $ with PADI, you should check out the TDI Nitrox course. It is available as an on-line course and TDI is recognized everywhere.

Take the money you save and put it towards a computer. You really should have one if you're diving Nitrox to take advantage of the increased bottom time.

Outside of theory, there is really nothing special about EAN, you should do the refresher though.

I agree with everything you say but the gear changed. The guy was certified in 1993 not 1953, everything we have now we had back then.
