You are in the Basic Scuba Discussions Forum: This forum has special rules. This forum is intended to be a very friendly, "flame free zone" where divers of any skill level may ask questions about basic scuba topics without fear of being accosted. Please show respect and courtesy at all times. Remember that the inquirer is looking for answers that they can understand. This is a learning zone and consequently, any off-topic or overly harsh responses will be removed.

As to the topic, it is the same as any certification, the recognition of a certain level of training completed. But theres tons of threads on this already if youll do a search.

So how is "master diver" a basic question?

So how is "master diver" a basic question?

Seems like a pretty basic question about training

divers of any skill level may ask questions about basic scuba topics without fear of being accosted

edit: we even talk about it in OW class

Master Scuba Diver Rating Courses - Advanced Open Water Diving - PADI Scuba Dive Training Organization

Master Scuba Diver, what does bring to a table? Any specific knowledge? Any standing in a dive community? What are pros and cons? Seems like a Dive Master is a better choice if one chooses to move past a rescue diver...

I'll let the others beat up on the Master Diver program ... that topic's been discussed at some length in several threads. But I think it's worth pointing out that pursuing a Divemaster rating can be a very expensive option with little benefit unless you intend to pursue becoming a dive professional. Lots of people have a misconception that DM training makes them a better diver. It's a nice theory, but in practice it really doesn't teach you much in terms of diving skills ... it's more about becoming a scuba professional and focuses on leadership skills. Other considerations are that once you reach a professional level ... and DM is the first level of dive professional ... in order to maintain an active status you must pay annual membership dues to the agency and carry a liability insurance policy. The latter is needed because your potential liability increases due to your level of training and your status as a dive pro.

I always start any discussion with a prospective DM candidate by asking them why they want to pursue the DM training. If it turns out that they really just want to become a better diver, then I discuss alternative training paths ... including recreational and technical level courses with other agencies.

There are numerous ways to move past Rescue Diver. Not all of them are PADI alternatives. But it behooves you to carefully consider your reasons for taking a given class ... not all paths will be a good fit for your goals. DM is probably the most wasteful class that a diver can take if their goals do not include working as a dive professional.

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

Guys, stick to the topic without the snarky comments please.

I also looked into the master diver / dive master certification.

One shop owner ( friend) refused to enroll me in either. He said it not the type of diver I am 1) you do npy enjoy teaching 2) it's not fair just to take you money

I was introduced by a sb member to a semi local gue/ tec instructor. After a few conversation I realize I was looking for the education and skill sets. Getting additional cards are lagniappe. The only thing I see cards are perquisites for the next level of training towards your long term diving skills goal.

I have a dive buddy with 30+ years diving with over 3000 dives and just have a open water card. Cause all he want to do is dive.
