Where is the rust coming from? 100 hours doesnt sound too bad for synthetic oil. You will need to make sure that the separators are functioning properly.

The filter canister itself. They are deep drawn steel canisters with a screw-in top, probably 1/4" thick. I have no idea who they are made by. So, the inside walls of the filter are flaking rust-dust off into the media. There isn't a terribly large amount, but the whole inside of the canister is burgundy colored. At the same time though, the activated carbon canister is exactly the same, but there is no rust in it... so I guess the activated alumina is doing its job.

If we end up getting a bigger tower for water removal, I'll probably see about cleaning it up and keeping the little guy around for hopcalite.

We're pretty close to the manual for oil changes. Ingersoll Rand specifies 12 months or 2000 hours for Type 30 compressors on synthetic oil, although I cannot find the 3500 psi manual, only the low-to-medium pressure models.

I verified on Saturday, the separators appear to be working and draining properly.

WOW ... that is really old school! Back in the 70s (when I started) it wasn't unusual to pack cylinder just like that. But, as you have found, that kept wet chemicals against the wall of the pressure chamber and that promoted corrosion. Corrosion leads to wall failure so almost everybody shifted to using corrosion resistant housings with some sort of a "can" inside to keep the wet chemicals off the sides.

While the boss is away;), clean up the system to get rid of all the oil film and change out the filter towers. Shift your chemicals over to 13x molecular sieve, a CO scrubber and AC in the appropriate cartridge for your new filter housing.
