Diving in Lake Norman NC

I am going to be going to a family reunion July 28th and from what I was told the family hosting it has a house right on the lake with a boat and stuff so I was wondering if there is anything to see there, visibility, depth? I was looking online and there is a lot about a Lake Norman Quarry but I'm not interested in doing that. Just felt like getting everything on and going for a 30 minute dive or so right off the back lawn.

Hey Anthony, you can dive Lake Norman but I will tell you from experience there is no visibilty to speak of. MAYBE a couple of feet but nothing to get excited about.

Anthony... Diving in Lake Norman is pretty poor diving. I do it when someone losses something or to clean the bottom of my sailboat but that is just about it. Maybe to test out something but not a place I would recommend to somebody. If you had the time, I would say, drive out to Wilmington or Myrtle Beach and catch a wreck dive which are pretty good but will cost you @ 4-5 hours drive time...!

Rereading your post... Not sure I would hassle with it but you never know what you just might find just off the back yard... lee

After that day in the family reunion we are driving out to my uncles house from the other side of the family out on topsail island for a week. I heard there is a lot of good diving there so now I just have to find a good dive shop to charter the trip if I do decide to even go diving while I'm there.

There is some absolutely great diving out of Morehead City. If your profile is accurate, the operators will likely restrict you to the shallower dives closer to shore. The dives out in the Gulf Stream are in the 100'+ range. This is the perfect time of the year to dive the NC coast. We are headed down there in early Sept for some wreck diving.

Too many crazies on Lake Norman - not worth the risk to me.

To dive the Quarry, you have to be a member. I did check out dives there and have done a couple of dives since. It's great for skills. It's protected, so no boaters or ninja jet-skiers or fishermen to worry about. The bluegill are jerks, but fun in their on way. I just enjoy the peacefulness.

Now this next questions is important because of safety. If me and my dad just swim off the coast of the beach not looking to see anything special but just to go underwater and hopefully see something cool. Would we be able to get back to the beach? I go swimming there all the time and the farthest I swam out was probably around 150-200 feet out and was able to get back in. I ask this because everyones always telling me how to be carful the current doesn't pull me in so I want to know if it really could pull us in past a certain point or could we swim back to the beach. I know the easiest way to do that is swim at an angle not straight into it.

I wont comment on your last question other than we are heading out on a couple of easy wreck dives the first weekend in August out of Carolina Beach... You probably have a lot of good dive operations near you but if you are still around Aug 4/5 and feel like driving down to Carolina Beach, you would be more than welcome to join our club. Its a good introduction dive off the coast!
