Holy crap. Another thread on the snorkel. Use it if you like and don't if you don't. No big difference. Who cares?

Next on the agenda, "I'm looking for recommendations on a vest BC", stay tuned

Forget about the vest go with the wing.

you cant use the wing because you will end up on the surface floating head down and need a snorkle.

Not if you carry a SpareAir.

One good reason for a snorkle - while returning from a dive a few ago we encounter some dauphin in the pass. The boat Cpt, not having another trip that afternoon stopped and let us get in. Those of us with a snorkle had a great time and stayed in until the Cpt told us we needed to go, those without didn't stay long.

I see that DiveLvr is a local so it may be that down here a snorkle is a real great asset to have. I take one for all the reasons he listed above but obviously not all places are the same.

As for using a snorkle while swimming on your back; I can't imagine how that would work. It sounds like you would get a mouth full of salt water.
One of my best dive trip memories is snorkeling with an Oceanic Whitetip on a surface interval in Hawaii. The DM video taped it! I usually keep a spare mask with snorkel for moments like this. I do love snorkeling!

DiveLvr, I'm with you on this one. But I'm a lowly OW with only 25 dives on my profile .I will continue to carry and use my Snorkle on all dive despite the condescending looks/remarks I may receive from the experts that say I shouldn't .:)
I hope they dont fret about MY snorkle I hope they enjoy there dive as much as I enjoy mine.:)

I think the mark of maturity is when you know what is right for you and you stop listening to the testicle waving rants of others about what is the best gear or un-needed gear. Give your opinion, listen to others and then do what you feel is comfortable/ right for you... clearly, the snorkel is the perfect example of this. I would say when properly trained in its use, it is indispencible for the majority of dive situations. Other may disagree, after 50+ comments on this thread, I think at least you know the pros and cons...

Now I am interested watching everyone beat-up on BCD's. That is a fight that will turn bloody. :angrymob:

Very true Rich.

Most everyone argues from their own perspective and our experiences shape our opinions. The same arguments can be made for dive computers or compasses or pony bottles. Some people have them and use them so they see a benefit. Some people have them but don't use them (to their full potential) so they see them as available but not necessary all the time. Others don't have them but have adapted their diving so that those things are not required so they see them as unnecessary all together.

The mature person can see that, for their situation, a piece of equipment may or may not be wanted or needed but that their situation is not the same for every other diver.

Snorkel use is a very regional thing.
Cave divers, lake divers, open ocean boat divers, may not have a use for snorkels.
But California shore divers who deal with kelp and barely submerged rocks that need to be crawed over to get out would have a greater need for a snorkel.
These arguments have become so political. It becomes annoying when certain groups, mostly the non snorkel crowd, deem snorkels somehow 'amature' and if you find a use for one then you need to brush up on skills because snorkels are so beginner and PADI, and make these retarded blanket statements that snorkels are for losers.
I find this attitude very pompous, and I will point it out if for nothing more than to help out a new diver who is unsure about gear that there is nothing wrong with using a snorkel, and some of us who have been diving for quite some time still swear by them and consider snorkels a very handy and important piece of gear for the right application.
