You're taking a "brand spanking new" diver deep drift diving in Cozumel? Might want to ask Christi about alternatives.

We have stayed in the Residencias Reef building twice in the last two years. The first being on the 3rd floor and the last time on the ground floor. Ground floor wins hands down for us. Walk right off the patio and a min away from the pool or beach. The second and 3rd floor you have to walk out of the front of the building and then around to the back (patio) area. We really likes the access to the ground floor being able to refill our frozen drinks while at the pool. You will love the beach. You can walk for miles when going south. There is a beach resort/club that the cruiser use south, not a far walk where you can eat and get drinks. Only open day light hours.

Thanks for all the pointers!

@diversteve What's difficult about drift diving? You just let yourself be pushed by the current and look at the pretty fishes. I dove Cozumel with 5 dives under my belt and loved it.

It's the deep part. And the possible need to abort the dive due to equipment failure or getting separated and drift by yourselves for a while till your picked up.

But you seem to have it all under control after 5 dives so what do I know...

The Cozumel dive ops are well acquainted with brand new divers and how to handle them. As long as you let your op know that you are a newbie, you'll be fine.

Well, probably. http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/accidents-incidents/415495-diver-lost-cozumel-today.html

I don't like to be a harbinger of doom. In fact I agree, mostly, with ggunn's comment. But there are exceptions to every rule and the above referenced A&I thread on the death of a new diver is a cautionary note that things can happen on any dive. And if the diver is unprepared, then crap happens. Avoid complacency! DiverSteve has provided some good advice in terms of talking to your op - in your case Blue XTSea if that is who you ultimately choose - to make sure the dive(s) are well within the ability and comfort range of divers in your party.

I have several dozen dives with Blue XTSea, if that is your choice, with beginners and well seasoned divers. Just let your Divemaster know of your experience level and expectations, they will take good care of you.

I have absolutely no doubt BlueXTSea have the staff and DM that are capable of handling new divers. I will of course let them know, but it doesn't make me nervous at all.

The Mega and Chedraui are near each other, and each has advantages. Mega has better meat, dairy, and seafood. Chedraui has better liquor prices (though Mega beats them on selection). We use both, along with San Francisco, Soriana, Aki, Bodega Aurerra, etc.

You can find those supermarkets and a lot of other resources on this map and see where that is in relation to Residencias Reef by entering that as a search term in the search box.

You'll note that my map includes Rentadora Isis. Like many here, I'm a big fan. I think from that far south renting is probably a better choice than taxis.

Montreal is my second-favorite place to visit after Cozumel, even in December. Remember that December is high season on the island so it's not too early to reserve rental cars and even restaurants.

Seriously? You'd make a dinner reservation NOW (July 9) for a table at Kinta in December?
