On the other hand, if a customer comes in to their LDS and says, 'I have been thinking about A, B, and C. Do you think they would offer value for the price, and are they what I would find useful as a less experience / more experienced diver?', then the door is open.

This is a good point however what happens when the LDS that the buyer is going to does not carry brands A, B, or C or only carries one or two of them? I think that would definitely skew the conversation with them as they will be partial to what they carry. Looking for unbiased advice on brands/bells and whistles in my opinion may be better acquired right here on SB as the only person to gain anything would be the person asking the question. That way the person could make an informed decision and make up there mind before possibly getting swayed by any sales pitch.. At least thats my .02 cents :-)

After a lot of research online from the users of the Galileo Luna, I purchased it from my LDS. My LDS continues to give me service and education after the sale. My gear purchase(s) doesn't stop when I receive the product, it continues to evolve thru education and tips from the LDS. I know they need to make a sale to stay in business, so may charge a little more, but they also fill my tanks and then when I go to pay, they just wave away my money away for that fill. I also am given advice such as " here, take this extra part when u travel, just in case." The "just in case" hasnt happened, but I can't get that service from an online purchase. I also know my product is new, and not previously used, wiped clean and sold. I trust my LDS, after all, it is life support equipment!!

The only computer that is "life support" is the one between your ears. In fact no gear is "life support". It is a mechanical device that allows you to have fun under water. Life support is the dive plan, the training and experience you bring to that plan, and how you react to unforeseen events. The life support line is sometimes used to scare new divers into spending more money than they really need to.

I sometimes wonder what would have happened if my first LDS had only charged "a little more" and not porked the pooch on my first reg service. Or if the next LDS had reasonable prices and good service. Or if the 3rd one was an authorized dealer for the regs I had. Or if the 4thy one had the right tools to not damage my reg....

Would I have found Leisurepro and Scubastore and then ebay. Would I have still ended up servicing my own regs and getting into older, very affordable, high performance used regs? Maybe, maybe not.

Sorry, I have been AWOL for awhile. I never intended to imply that my LDS won't service whatever reg's I buy just that I don't want to ship them anywhere for servicing is all. I have also decided that I was misguided on the ScubaPro parts for life program. It just doesn't make sense for us at this point in time. Chalk it up to a newbie that has DKS right? :D
