I actually own both of these regs. Here's my take on the two:

Pros for the Hog:
  • Breathes great
  • Great price
  • DIN works well for me since I always use my own tanks when diving locally
  • Shiny looking and sturdy feeling
  • I like having two of the same second stages
  • Easily expandable if/when I move to doubles
Pros for the Aqualung LX (the Supreme cold-water model):
  • Breathes great.
  • Light. Great for travel.
  • Reasonably priced compared to other comparable non-Hog regs
  • All of the local shops service Aqualung giving me tons of service options
Cons of the Hog:
  • I'm less likely to bring it with me when traveling. It's heavy. Yoke tanks are more universally available.
  • Servicing is a bit more of a pain. I'll have to mail it off or take to a local dealer that's nowhere near my home or work.
Cons of the LX:
  • I really, really didn't like the ABS octo I originally bought with it. Felt cheap and wasn't going to work when I transitioned to a long-hose setup. I think there is a Titan LX octo available now, but at the time I'd have had to move up to the Legend octo. Eventually, I replaced it with an Apeks AT40 octo, which has worked fine for me.
  • Construction doesn't feel as sturdy, although it's well-made. Just more plastic and less metal. Not as shiny.
For the time being, I'm using the Hog as my main regulator with the Aqualung for travel and a backup/loaner. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

Go with the aqualung, in the long run you will be much happier. It breathes great, light weight, reasonably priced and worldwide support for the product and service parts for the life of the regulator.

The ABS was not designed to go with the Legeng LX. The Legend LX should be paired with a balanced second stage.

ya i forgot dins where obsolete. the aqua lung only has to be serviced every two years from what ive been told. thanks for all the input

Actually either reg could go years without service given reasonable use and care. What you're referring to is probably a change in aqualung's policy of requiring annual service to maintain the warranty. I don't know what HOG's policy is, but usually paying annual service to maintain a warranty is a bad deal, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm not sure if you realize the "DIN is obsolete" comment was a joke. DIN users often feel that the DIN system is far superior. While it does have advantages, they are nothing next to the inconvenience of using an adapter if you own DIN regs and use yoke tanks. It's really simple; if you use yoke tanks, get a yoke reg. If you use both types of valves, a DIN reg plus an adapter will allow for that, but by far the best long term solution in that case is to just have DIN and yoke regs.

HOG reg service interval is two years. Kits can be bought by anyone from any dealer. Ideally a HOG dealer should service it if you don't plan to do it yourself. But if you have a competent tech local to you it's not rocket science.

I can sell you a complete HOG set up (Cold water sealed D-1 1st stage, 2 indentical balanced fully adjustable HOG seconds, hoses, DIN/Yoke adapter, and bolt snap) with SPG for less than you can get a Legend 1st and one second. One site has the Basic legend for 585.00 and that seems to be on the cheap side compared to a few others. And the second stage is not even adjustable. A complete HOG set will be less than that. Shipped.

I started off with DIN and never looked back. I dive hp's mostly, and the two lp's I do have are fitted with the pro valve with the insert removed.
I have traveled to other sites in the US, and the few times I used the DIN to yoke adaptor was not an issue.
If you travel overseas you will see more DIN than yoke.
You can always convert DIN to yoke (via adaptor), but not the other way around.

That depends on where you travel, certainly everywhere I have traveled, Indonesia, Thailand, NZ, Australia, Japan you will definitely see way more Yoke than DIN.

You can add Fiji, Malaysia, Palau, PNG, Philippines, Soloman Island, Taiwan and Truk to the list.

l also own both. I gave the Legend to the wife, and dive with the HOG. Most tanks around here are yoke, but I haven't found using the adaptor to be a pain, and I can also just buy another second stage when i transition to doubles. It is heavier than the Legend, but not massively so. Neither are lightweight travel regs!
I also like that I can easily open and clean out the regs if anything were to enter it. I think it's impossible to open the new Legend without special tools.

Save the cash and buy the HOG. You won't regret it. (especially at service time if you decide to service them yourself for less than $60 in parts)
