hello papa crusher , welcome to the thread .. You a blackwater diver ?

I'm not a blackwater diver, just a wannabe with aspirations of greatness...lol. My father lives in Summerville, SC and I've done some land fossil hunting and I've waded the Edisto and made some small finds. You guys have me drooling. I might be in the area in the end of Feb. and I might attempt a walk in at a spot on the Edisto where I did some wading. Do you guys think the water could be braved with just wet suit? Thanks for all the pics, they are truly inspiring!

im gonna say.....um....no...I wouldnt be in to 45-50 degree waters with out a drysuit! but im a skinny guy so I have NO natural insulation haha not to mention I hate being cold.....you may be fine in a wetsuit....i dont know....everyone has different tolerances to cold water....but as for me.....NOPE!!!

My next exploration of the Edisto will be launched from the Mars Oldfield landing (first public landing above Givhans State Park about mid map).

I am hoping to go at least ten miles above Mars Oldfield in my motorized canoe and then drift and motor back to the ramp.

I will be searching for more gravel beds like the one Mike and I discovered last summer. I am expecting to find mostly 2' to 4' deep water with an occasional "deep" spot of 6' to 10'. I expect the river to be "friendly" in this area yet VERY backwoods.

The water level of the Edisto last summer apparently was significantly low. I heard rumor that it was down 10 feet from normal. That sounds a little much but that was the rumor.

I am seeing online what looks like another potentially good launch site with a ramp named Canadys (about 12 miles above Mars Oldfield)

Mike I am going to be suggesting a public ramp to Phil (it is not on the linked map above) which is below and much closer to the area we have been working. If we were to have trouble we could paddle downstream back to the ramp. The Edisto does not have near the numbers of potential "rescue" people that the Cooper has.

Here is a link to some photos I took at the West Bank public ramp. This ramp appears to be in the area of the beginning of the ACE Basin. Based on my scuba experience I am guessing the water to be about 20' deep here. I would expect some log jams and a few alligators lounging in the tall grass. The water did not look TOO fast that particular day, but looked like a steady current. The water looked tannin stained and not too dirty.

I'm going to try and get up to the edisto this year for sure. Been doing pretty good land searching lately aeromike can appreciate a 2" brown mako being that he's a mako lover. Been getting some nice great whites lately too but nothin really big. Just found my first matrix great white just over an inch long. Post some pics in a bit. Also my biggest and smallest tigers.
