Too bad this ACCIDENT happened but if it was Joe Blow from Kansas and a couple of his buddies the post would have about 5-10 comments and then forgotten. Hope the females come out on top of this catastrophe. Let it remind you that this can happen to ANYONE.

Maybe this time I shall paint it red… Every one of us is built differently. There is no point to read stories about deep air dives and then jump into water and try to imitate it.

Bret Gilliam: “I have also made a career of understanding the underlining physiology to the point where, believe me, every hair and follicle is tuned to the expectation that I'm going to have a problem”

Joe Odom: “The fact remains that some of us have survived incidents that we shouldn't have survived. And we've got very strong survival instincts as a result.”

Bob Raimo: "I've taken my experience and learned this from it. You don't dive deep on air. I can teach people that from experience now. I can tell them: 'Look, I got lucky, and luck is never part of my dive plan.'"

Many of you believe only first hand information. Here is some for you. At 150 ft you feel slightly dizzy. At 200 ft your reactions are really slow. At 250 ft you have memory gaps. You can only imagine in what state you are at 300… Believe me, if Raimo says that only thing you have in mind is; “I would wake up on the way up”, is exactly how it feels.

Everyone is different and your body can fool you. Maybe you can take photos at 250 ft, but when it comes to re-evaluate your dive plan or solve problems in hand, your mind is paralysed. Only few of us are blessed with talent as Gilliam: "Since I'm using 70% less gas…”. It means also, that his tissues are exposed to 70% less of nitrogen (read: narcosis)…

OK. Why I had to do deep air dives in the first place? Because in some locations where I have to work (NB! Not have fun), there is no helium available, but evidence what needs to be documented are at 200+ ft. Does it mean it is fun and thrilling? First time, maybe. But after you realise, that you actually do not remember your whole dive, it is a loud wakeup call.

Most of us have persons who love us and depend on us. Deep air dives are putting on a line not only our lives, but also lives of our beloved ones.

The reason this is so busy a thread is because it involves Cozumel which is one of the most active travel threads, it involves individual who are very much loved and cared for by all that know them, it involves dive professionals and instructors and finally because it reminds everyone that although it is relatively easy to have a very safe dive that going down into a place where humans are not designed to be can and usually does have disastrous outcomes. The absence of the Y chromosome has nothing to do with the popularity of this thread.

I will PM you......not gonna post it here..

I've read all the comments on both of the threads regarding this very tragic event. Got a question for you. Do you plan to dive in Cozumel again and if so with which Dive Op?

No but I assume in trying to relate it to this thread are you asking if this is the reason? No it is not......Cozumel is very affordable great diving many shops to choose from. Just be careful who you dive with. There are fantastic reefs that are not even close to any walls.

I'll give my answer - I do indeed plan to dive in Cozumel again. I'll be there in December diving with Dive with Martin. I'm diving with that outfit because I'm going with a group, and that is who they chose, but I've been diving with them before, and I trust them and like them. If I'm on my own, I'll dive with Aldora - I've been diving with them for years, & I know and trust them, PLUS, they've got Steel 120s, so I never have to worry about running out of air if I haven't been diving in 6 months (I have a tendency to be an air hog on the first few dives when I'm getting reacclimated), and, with everyone diving computers, long bottom times & long Surface Interval. I will NEVER dive with any of the cattle boat operations (20-30 divers on a big boat, one DM at front, one DM at back, 1st dive to 80', 45 minutes, 30 minute SI on boat, 2nd dive to 60', 35 minutes, no exceptions); those used to be common on Coz, but they've been going away; nor will I dive with ANY outfit that contracts to take Cruise Ship Passengers (just my own preference; they tend to be casual divers, show up hungover from hard partying on the boat, are not used to drift diving, and just don't pay attention to what they are doing - kicking up sand, killing corral, and generally disrespecting the reef & their fellow divers).

Yes, absolutely. The accident/incident documented here has nothing whatsoever to do with the diving I will be doing. I dive with Blue Angel, but there are scads of great dive ops on the island.

I've been diving Cozumel since 1992. I've made close to or over 200 dives there. Been out with 8 or 9 ops at this point. I've been posting here on Scuba Board since 2004, I think. I had trouble getting back on the board when they changed formats, for some reason couldnt toss my cookies without screwin up some other things. Had to sign up anew, thus the extra g on MAWG.

I can really recommend Caribbean Divers. On demanding dives I can always trust my life in the hands of their captain. They know what they do.
