Hello BBB... I remember the tooth was a Meg (I did not know that then) and it was a medium to dark brownish color. It was a symmetrical front tooth as opposed to a curved rear tooth. (I know that now) Its size was about 3.5", maybe 4" at the maximum. It was in very good condition. Had all three corners. Had all the enamel. Don't recall the conditions of the serrations

Mike... I think I saw a posting from you saying you may be making your first visit to Venice this season. Here is a photo from Jamie Bostwicks Facebook page. His Venice boat is the Aristakat. I posted this to show how different the teeth are there. They have this growth on them and it makes finding them a different game all together. They are much harder to spot.

Yeah I seen that and i am going to make a visit down there this summer. I heard that you think it is not normal, then turn it over. When I dive, I usually will put it in my goody bag and then go through it later. I do this with all the larger bone fossils because I am trying to add a nice piece with teeth marks on it. I have a smaller piece right now i found on my last trip to LaFarge quarry about what, 2-3 years ago.

I heard you can remove that encrustation with a mix of apple cider vinegar and water. That is what I used to clean that big whale vert I had. I think I am going to go diving next weekend, this weekend I have to work:(.

BTW, nice shell in your avatar~!

Finding teeth in the Gulf is very different from the coastal rivers that I dive. This is a whole different technique and approach. I have only dove Venice a few times from the beach. I thought it was a neat environment since it was so different than a dark river. I got to see plenty of fish and found a few small teeth. It was a great time and I hope to go back soon.

Did one dive today in an old spot and found some nice vertebra and ear bones from whales, and a broke Meg tooth. The vis in the water was about 6 inches (very windy). I am going back tomorrow to spend more time and work this area again. Getting excited about finding some keepers. Hope to have some neat stuff to share soon.

The apple cider vinegar works well but it is not a fast process. I have used it on Venice teeth. Takes at least 24 hours.

Here are some small Venice teeth I found on my second visit. I gave them a 24 hour apple cider vinegar bath prior to the photo. I really like the color of these teeth. I was expecting to find more and bigger teeth but I found Venice to be picked over like many other commercial dive sites. The other factor is my inability to recognize teeth covered in growth. I think diving the Cooper River for many, many years has trained my brain to look for teeth "the Cooper River way", of which is VERY different from Venice. I feel Jamie on the Aristikat is the boat that is most likely to try new sites.

Venice FL teeth

Glad you like the Avatar shell.. AeroMike. I found it offshore NC. It was laying on the bottom and was totally covered with growth, much like the Venice tooth. The growth was the same color as the bottom and hairy. I knew what I had because I had found one before. I took it out of my bag when back on the dive boat and a woman remarked "what an ugly shell". I told her it would clean up but I don't think she cared. To her it was ugly and I suppose she would have thrown it back.
