Without my wing, I'm able to hold depth at 33' with a full tank and 10' with an empty tank, using a 7mm wetsuit and large swing (85-108cf) tanks. I believe that having a mode of surface floatation that doesn't involve ditching weights adds to my safety, however I'm not convinced that diving without a BC is difficult or dangerous.
 
The safety stops are not mandatory. It's a recommendation. I still haven't gotten into the habit of doing them. Probably never will.

If you teach PADI, NAUI, etc., basic OW you will state that safety stops can be skipped if there is an urgent need to do so, but they should not be skipped otherwise.

You are probably very fit.

You should read peer-reviewed scientific articles on the effect of exertion, especially leg exertion, on DCS and microbubble formation before and after dives. But don't argue with me - PM Dr Deco.
 
In places with shallow shore diving, it is common that PADI & NAUI instructors will recommend a gradual ascent over a safety stop. I think the first safety stop I did locally during a class was in my NAUI MSD.

Leg exertion? Lung volume and shoulder angle makes up most of it for me. I don't kick any harder. If I had to kick more, I'd be right with you. That doesn't sound fun at all.

I suppose if your dive contour affords a three-minute safety stop there is no need to protract this into a six-minute safety stop.

If you read the back of the cards very carefully, they're "safety stops" until they become "mandatory stops" when you approach the edges of the NDL limits or go to ~100' or below.
 
Actually I think that's my misunderstanding. I somehow thought you meant that I was kicking to maintain buoyancy during the dive, rather than to establish depth at the start. Due to my fairly shallow depth range, I'm heavy enough to be able to descend by breath or surface dive without kicking. Indeed, if I were wanting to weight myself for a deeper dive I might need to exert myself more. I don't really dive deeper than about 40-50' though, due to my aforementioned dive contour.
