Other than the travel exhibitors that give you lots of local rum, etc. there are not too many free samples being given out. However, you can make some GREAT deals on Saturday as people are packing.

I noticed the Hollis scooter picture you had taken. Looks like they've vastly changed the hull locking mechanism. I got one of them back in July. Looks like they've abandoned the screw- on hull & adopted the clip- on hull instead, like most others. Makes me wonder if there might be issues with the screw- on design. To date I have had no issues with mine, other than some condensate getting into the headlight. Hollis took care of it quickly & since, have ad not other issues. Might post in Hollis' area & see what is up with the change.

Any general themes you noticed with respect to the downturn in the economy and the decline in the diving population ? (is the industry going to be more responsive to price-sensitivity going forward ?)
Is the dive industry still deluding themselves and chasing the microscopic fraction of the diving population defined as 'tech diving' with respect to their R&D emphasis ? (I noticed a lack of coverage with respect to things like rebreathers or side-mount, for example, so are they 'done' chasing the 'wealthy commando' demographic ? )
Any sign of gear orientation towards 'youth'? The average US diver is aged upper 40's,
and I'm wondering what youth oriented (excitement generating) gear you might have seen ?
Notice any new up-and-coming potential 'growth' brands ?
You and Elena look quite dapper! Some day I may actually attend DEMA, but until I do I'll experience it vicariously through your pictures.

The mood (theme?) was very upbeat in regards to the economy. Many manufacturers are increasing their production and all of the destinations said that occupancy was way up. The only negatives were from the Keys, where the oil spill scare screwed them up.
On the average, tech divers and (more importantly) tech diver wannabes spend a good deal more than their recreational counterparts. Just like muscle car enthusiasts out spend the average driver, this segment of our market pays (and paves) the way for most of the improvements in gear configuration.
There was a "Teens4Oceans" booth, a NAUI advert for Boy Scouts and Barry University.
Not really. I think the established brands are getting bigger and a few quite so.
