HMCS Annapolis project denied?

Apparently they were towed from Vancouver to Nanaimo.

I suspect that those who object to the sinking have already heard and understand this argument and it just doesn't matter to them. I believe their concern lies with the perception that their lifestyle will be disturbed by the hordes of noisy dive boats that will flood into the bay every day ad nauseum. But the reality is what....maybe one, maybe two boats a couple of times a week will actually show up. I'm sure they have more annoyance from the jetboats in the summer.
So it seems to me the fear has been put into the property owners by someone...I imagine the Bay's self-appointed leader...you know the type of person. There seems to be one in every neighborhood...the one who bullies and cajoles the rest into issues when there are no issues through the use of propaganda. So this group under that leadership is going to use any irrelevant means to to sidetrack the initiative when their real objection is the misguided worry about their peace and quiet when that problem really doesn't exist.
In summary, the leader of this group worries not a bit about the ecology of the bay, nor whether the area is too small for such a thing or any of the other reasons that are pulled out of the hat. This is a NIMBY thing and the argument against the sinking probably doesn't really represent the true feeling of all the residents but rather a select few. And they have a clever lawyer who likes to dig and find irrelevant reasons to object. This is going to be a tough one.

I got to be one of 2 volunteers that were invited to a project meeting to discuss this latest development.
There has not been any official decision made yet.
More information will be coming out shortly. Please be a little patient. Someone, possiblly myself, will be making a new post once there is something to report to the community.
In the mean time, the ARSBC still needs volunteers to assist with further prepping of the ship. Who's in??

Sounds like the problem we are having with the Adelaide.. some people do not like to let facts interfere with their POV! Closed minds and self interest manage to block reason

Sorry I didn't get this up sooner -
The BC Government has finally approved Halkett Bay as the official Sink Site of the (former) HMCS Annapolis! This was only given a week or 2 ago, and apparently can not be revoked.
In other words, the project is very much alive, and needs some help to get the final push done.
The ARSBC is doing it's (probable) final large Metal Extraction Weekend this Sat and Sunday! If you are able to come out either, or both, days, please do so. The more hands the better. There will also be a Free BBQ lunch both days.
Also, if we can get at least a handful of people out each weekend day for the next couple of months, we can get the environmental inspections done soon, and get the paperwork rolling for the final sink permit! Let's get moving people!!
If anyone is interested in helping out, please contact the ARSBC (www.artificialreef.bc.ca) it has been updated, and there is a bunch of info on the ship, as well as contact info.
Otherwise, you could also message me and I'll do what I can to coordinate.

Actually, the people who opposed this project didn't give any evidence of being tree huggers ... they were mostly well-off NIMBY's who consider Halkett Bay as their private playground.
Since I got back to teaching last July, I haven't been able to get back up there and work on this project. Wish I could make it this week-end ... and may try rescheduling Sunday to see if I can.
Any notion of a sink date yet?
