Been a few years since I was in Cozumel and now I'm coming and bringing my teen, and would love to be able to take some pictures under water, any information on camera rental or maybe even a reasonable one to buy before we go!! Thanks..and.........8 days away!!!!

I dabble in underwater photography, and love taking pictures of people diving without
camera gear. We exchange email addresses, I send them, no money spent, just a thought.
Most camera junkies love to take pics, and enjoy sharing....

Walmart, has the cheap single use cameras.....

If it's the type I have gotten in the past, they are only good to about 12'. Any deeper than that and you can't turn the film advance wheel. Much deeper than that and they would probably flood.

It's too bad Holly and Armando are gone; their Island Photo business was a casualty of Wilma. That was a great place to rent UW cameras.

Now that I think about it, I believe we rented a UW camera one time at the Dive Paradise location across the street from Hotel Cozumel.

Renting an UW camera in Coz is a $40 to $50 a day adventure.....as I found out after drowning mine. One might consider other options.

That sounds about right. If it's a one time thing, it might be worth it, but it wouldn't take a whole lot of daily rentals to be as expensive as a camera would cost.

The last time I looked the price at Dive Paradise (Hotel Coz location) was $45 for the day & that included them transferring the photos to a CD. I don't know how many megapixels the camera was, nor brand but I'm pretty surre other dive shops will also rent them & prices should be competitive. IF you think you'd prefer to buy your own this may be helpful.

I shot some decent pics with my original 1 mp, better with my 3 mp, and now better with my 5. I need to move on up but - well, still enjoying my Sealife DC500 - 5 mp. You see those offered for around $200 frequently, here on SB and on ebay. Much better owning and keeping for the same money, if the camera is in good shape, the housing and o-ring good and the operator is careful, the operator downloads the manual and actually reads it, and practices land shots at home enough to know how to use it. Add some moisture munchers and a new battery from ebay; more info on Sealife owners forum.

As often as first time camera owners lose their cameras*, you might even go cheaper. There are many available, and I am not talking one-time use. Like this one - 6 mp, good to 33 ft, uses AA batteries (yes! :thumb:) for $99 plus SD card.

* No, I have not flooded or lost one yet. I did get a float strap for when I use it without the strobe, like when videoing, or last month rapid runs, as it is a sinker otherwise.

Oh contrair mon frair, (really mispelled), Armando is still on the island working out of his house. He is occaisionally off the island, and may be at the moment, but try giving him a shout and see if he can help you out.

I belive his e-mail address is either, photocozumel@ecozumel.net or photocoz@cozumel.net one of the 2.

They are also on Facebook: Welcome to Facebook

by the way, if you are interested in buying a good used camera, I have a Sea & Sea DX-5000 and housing I'm selling, $325 +S&H...95% of the photos taken on my galleries have been taken with the DX-5000.

I just talked with Armando, he is off island until Sept.10th. If you are going later than that he will be more than happy to help you out.

He and Holly are wonderful people as well as world class photographers. Armando has been published in every Scuba publication there is and has done work for National Geographic, both still and video work. There's not enough room here to list his creditials as a photographer.

OOPS! Just saw that you are 8 days out, less than that now. I see you are in Texas, if you are anywhere near Dallas and are interested in buying my camera. I can get it to you in person before you leave on vacation & save you $20 in shipping :D...just a thought.

Holly also teaches the underwater photography here in Colorado. Very nice people and I learned alot from her class.
