actually it's probably not the thanks, it's probably more the fact that the threads where there is a lot of thanking go on often include people complaining about other posters behind their backs (like me ) or just in general whinging about various threads or mods or sockpuppers or various other things going on.

I mean, whatever, it doesn't bother me and i find those threads amusing, but you would have to be naive not to realise why people find you guys offensive.

+1

That's all well and good if people dislike us. However, the reason for the removal of the Thanks button has been cited as "unhealthy polarization of the community" [presumably by those abusing the Thanks button]. Therefore if there no abuse of the Thanks button, there is no reason to remove the Thanks button.

If people dislike us, then can take that up with us [or not] :idk: but it shouldn't affect the greater scubaboard community at large OR the thanks button.

... I thought it was funny, actually ... in a "Three Stooges" sort of way ...

:hm: I guess that would make me Shemp

Hmm, I am sorry to see it go and I must say I never really felt it was abused. Actually this was the only board I participate in that had the feature, I always thought it was kind of unique.

Wont it make threads very long now, with quotes and "Thanks" - just wondering.?

The more I think about this the more annoyed I get. The thanks feature supplied something that was like the eye contact that's missing from internet conversations. I really think the user feel will be diminished without it. It was an excellent way to let someone know you heard them without adding fluff to a thread.

I hate to make a fuss about something that seems so trivial, but this seems like a mistaken decision to me. I would really appreciate a fuller explanation of it's necessity.

ScubaBoard got along just fine without it for years. Personally, I felt it was a positive improvement in that it gave people a chance to "reach out" to those whose postings they found had value.

It's always tough to take away something, once given. In this case, I'm going to assume that the staff had valid reasons for the decision. I do wish, however, they'd given us a chance for input before making the decision ...

Oh come on... I just find it lame when people act like 'ohhh we just meant it in fun, no big deal, I dunno why people are so upset' when they have been spending time their chat threads saying things like 'let's dog pile on <insert name> because they said something mean to us', whinging about everything and anything and sending each other nasty PMs about people (some of which I've been forwarded). The 'Thanks' thing is just something people that you guys have annoyed could point to (imho).

And I don't dislike you, I don't really even know who you are :idk: I don't dislike anybody on SB, most people I am indifferent towards or I like them. I actually don't think your group affects the greater SB community and hence why I see no need to remove the 'Thanks' as there's only a small group of you and you guys are mostly ignored because you stay in the chat threads and most people are here for scuba related stuff.

But how can anyone, be it the board, Pete, the members, or whomever keep it from happening all over again? New people join Scubaboard all the time. What's to keep a future group from starting the process all over again even if it's truly just in fun.

Are the board/moderators now suppose to start trying to decide which "Thanks" are genuine and which should be removed if some are reported to them?

If a few members wish to play around with the Thanks button, to amuse themselves, why should that cause a problem for others? Often the offended are simply looking for someone or something to be offended by, and any issue will do.

It seems to me that those who would take such light hearted amusement by someone else so seriously, become offended, and then complain enough to force an alteration in everyone else's behaviors, have serious emotional issues. It feels like a form of censorship of the larger group, by a few malcontents, and troublemakers who wish to control the behaviors of others.

Jim...

You're spot on with this post..... :thumb:

there are some people here that are going to whine about what someone else is doing, even if it has nothing to do with them.... they are just "born to whine". It doesn't matter what it is.

Go figure....

'ohhh we just meant it in fun, no big deal, I dunno why people are so upset' when they have been spending time their chat threads saying things like 'let's dog pile on <insert name> because they said something mean to us',

The thanks thing was something that we just thought was fun to do :headscratch:

The only thing we do (which is no different than MoF, and possibly other chat threads) is link to a thread which we find either interesting, odd, funny, annoying, etc so other people could read what we read. If friends also find it interesting, odd, funny, annoying etc and choose to post...that isn't us calling on the group to dogpile. It's a group of friends who conversate about everything, including what we read on ScubaBoard. There is no conspiracy here.

In regards to nasty PMs...I'd be curious to see something I've said in PM that I haven't said on the board. I'm usually very open and honest about my opinions on things and people, I know you certainly know that.

And back to the original topic, what does any of that have to do with the Thanks Button?

How about allowing people to decide for themselves the difference between a
'wow, great post' thank you and a social thank you and a sarcastic thank you. That's part of the fun. Works in real life...
