After reading this entire thread I was able to use some of the advice and it was very helpful thanks.

In fact it does notNo matter how you breath (diaphragm or chest) the volume of the body and thus your buoyancy will change the same way.
Go out and do some diving where there's something else to hold most of your attention: [...] You'll be surprised how much better your buoyancy control is once you stop over-thinking it. Once that sinks in (no pun intended), the "Aha! moment" won't be far away; then it's just a matter of polish and trim.
Please share what worked and what didn't. It's always great to hear these things from someone learning their skills.
Elan, perhaps by "yoga breathing" you can have finer control over your breathing and thus "dial in" your buoyancy more easily?
I don't know for scuba (I haven't even done my OW dives yet) but I've noticed I have far more control over my breathing if I breath from my diaphram. For me I definitely know I was more relaxed breathing this way in the pool.
I donno, I found that timing plays the major role in maintaining the level.
