The full title is: Blind Man's Bluff The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage

There are a lot of very detailed reviews of Blind Man's Bluff posted in several of the internet book sites. Rather than do a mediocre job of summarizing it I will just give you a heads up. Anyone interested in saturation diving, submarines, deep ocean salvage, and the part they played in the Cold War should enjoy this well written and researched book.

Understandably, there are a lot of holes in the story since most of these programs are still highly classified and the subject matter covers a vast number of projects. This is not to imply inaccuracy, rather a less complete picture than you might hope for. There was a History Channel documentary you can still catch now and then, but the book is way better.

Great book by Sherry Sontag. The book's central character John Craven the Navy's cheif scientist at the time was an incredibly brillant man. The tactics our navy performed required nerves of steel. Good read...

Not to take anything away from Dr. Craven, but I am not sure it is fair to say he was the "central character" because Blind Man's covered so many projects and people. He certainly was a very important figure no doubt. I considered also mentioning his book: The Silent War The Cold War Battle Beneath the Sea. It should be noted that my interpretation is no doubt biased favoring saturation diving and operations.

If you really like Blind Man's, you will enjoy his book also. I found it to be more oriented to submarine operations and not as easy a read for people without a background on the boats.

So many people were cogs in the cold war wheel and had very little idea of the big picture. I am sure both books will be especially interesting to them and a bit gratifying to all those who can’t even mention their part to loved ones today.

I agree. His accomplishments were so impressive that he became the hero in the book in my mind at least. The US Navy is certainely not about one man...
