Date: March 06, 2010
Location: Huntsville, Texas. Blue Lagoon #1, Main Beach
Water Temp: 70 Degrees air, 52.7 F in the water. Maybe a bit warmer on the surface but it sure didn't feel like it.
Visibility: 10-20.
Max Depth: 31.6 ffw Probably deeper in some areas.

Comments:
The water, at least from the surface, is the clearest I have personally seen. Viz down below was good as well, though there seemed to be a lot of green algae floating around. The water level is pretty high. I was at Main Beach #4 and the water was just a few feet from the base of the platform / shelter.

Phil & Co. have done a lot of work during the off season and the place really looks good. Nitrox fills are now available. I believe they are converting the old check-in building at the front to a bunk house for divers wanting to spend the night but not in tents. There is a new office on the property next to Air Phils / the fill station.

I didn't dive in Lagoon #2, but it looked like there were a couple groups of dive-campers having a good time. Water conditions looked to be the same as Lagoon #1.

Another set of new Advanced Open Water divers were certified during their dives on Giant Stride today. We went to Shaker Plant for the Deep Dive and Wreck Alley to explore the houseboat for the Wreck Dive. Visibility is improving, divers reported vis up to 10' (before they silted it out). Vis is improving, temps are coming up, with a thermocline at 35', and the lake is almost full.

Where did you find 70-80 ft of vis LVX? Was it on this dive?

Spring Lake, San Marcos
March 18

Temp, same
Vis, 50-60'
Spring Flow, 270cfs

Worked in Deep Hole and Arch Site this morning. Deep Hole is looking very good. Pete and me spent most of the time there clearing algae north of the main Spring. John was working cleaning the springs and floating Coontail SW of Fault Line. The hump between Deep Hole and Arch Site is still deep but has around 6" of plant growth making it less defined looking from the Deep Hole side.

Arch Site is a complete mess with algae. Problem is that there is just not quite enough of it to make clearing easy. Coontail is under control. To do a good job, scooters are needed. The lines are still in ragged shape and need to be removed and then replaced (there are currently two (2) sets of lines in place).

Comal River

3/18/10 @ 8:15 PM
Weather- 68 degrees
Water temp: usual (70-72)
Viz: @ 10'
BT: 45 minutes

Dive number 52 and first night dive. I met up with my usual buddy for some much needed bottom time. We put in at Landa RV park and drifted down to Hinman Island Park for exit. Depth at exit was 13'.

Had a great time drifting through and seeing all of the plecastamus', turtles, and crawfish. I never realized how many crawfish were in that river. Their colors were great and it was interesting to watch how they handle the current. It was cool to cover the light for a while and near pitch black until your eyes adjusted a little, then see all the little moving black spots on the bottom (crawfish). It was definately a new experience for me and I really enjoyed it.

Looking forward to my next night dive planned for Canyon Lake.
