For those of us that have no idea who AG is or what this is implying, could you please explain this further?

Also are ankle weights allowed in Fundies? I was thinking of doing this course, and I imagine they would not be allowed, so what is the solution for me given it is so difficult to trim out without them? Just grin it and bare it whilst floating on my head underwater? (serious question, despite flippant tone)

Andrew Georgitsis

Ex GUE Training director.

Now UTD head honcho

Ankle weights would be considered a crutch.

Andrew Giorgitsis invented the fundies course and after my buddy was told he was not allowed to wear ankle weights, watch Andrew put a pair of them in his pockets so if you do take the course make sure you have big pockets or use DIR ankle weights, jet fins with SS spring straps.

Ok I have heard of 'AG' then and understand the reference.

Thanks for the tips :)

Chocula, Peter was being extremely sarcastic. He finds it irritating that DIR zealots inveigh against ankle weights as though they were a sin, and then wear Jet fins with spring straps to get the same effect.

With the 72s, I use a 20 lb weight belt and I still can't trim them out. Since my 85s trim out without effort, I just generally leave the 72s alone. (Bob dropped them over two inches on my back and I still went head down the minute I stopped finning :) ).

A certain local dive shop seems to sell ankle weights to every new drysuit diver that comes through their door. We see them at the local dive sites and as soon as they gear up I know where they shop just by the uniform.
I get that they need to sell poodle jackets and split fins to pay the bills but c'mon does every diver really need to use ankle weights?
I followed a couple of those roto-tillers out at the dive site this weekend and was shocked by the effect these guys had on the vis.
Do us all a favor and lose the ankle weights, a quick look behind you should tell you if you need them or not.

The mere fact that they were rototiling only indicates their lack of diving experience, not their need for ankle weights.
Ankle weights do indeed benefit some divers and are simply not needed by others. Only practice and experience will determine if a diver will benefit from their use, not the myopic opinion of others.

So what exactly is the difference between Jet fins and having neutral or positively buoyant fins with ankle weights? You still end up with your ankles being weighted. Maybe if I line my fin pockets with a bit of lead, I will have the same affect but "look" more DIR?

If you look very, very carefully, you'll see that one of my buddies has added 2 lb weights into the middle "ventillation" slot on each Jet-style fin, which I think covers both worlds: he gets to look cool while nobody questions his "ankle" weights. :D

if you put all that weight to the lower end of the tank you should be fine I think.

Just an FYI, it is annoying when someone has said they have spent a lot of time trying to trim out doing various things, plus time with very experienced instructors, only to have no luck, then to hear someone on the internet making comments saying that if you only do what they say you'll be fine.

I in fact just share my experience and the solution me and my friend has found. Just ignore it...:) LP72ses are long tanks and moving the weight from the weight belt to the ends of the tanks will make a big difference.

The LDS is full of the most buoyant fecal deposits! Buying ankle weights is a waste of money. What you want to do is come up to Ontario where the law prohibits the removal of artifacts from shipwrecks. Bring your East Coat Wrecker crowbars and help yourself to some souvenirs. Our local constabulary will reward you with a pair of stainless steel ankle weights and a matching pair of wrist weights. Each will have a nice matching chain so you don't lose one. Furthermore, you will receive an orange jumpsuit at no extra charge.

:-)

Don't know about "Buying ankle weights is a waste of money", I have a couple 1.5's that I hang 1 around my 1st stage & use others to weight a dive flag down---often.....
