Roatan in Late July/Early August?

Thanks for the continuing advice, everyone! I have a local dive shop here that highly recommends CoCo View Resort... Anyone concur?

When is hurricane season in Honduras? What are my odds of getting nailed by one in Early August?

I've also read that someone died on a zip line a couple of years ago. I can only assume that the safety has been revamped since then and greatly improved? :shocked2:

I have been going to CoCoView since the late 80's....there is no pool or beach if that is what you are looking for....but they do have hammocks that I regularly nap in It is a dive resort....not a hotel with diving offered....

Roatan is pretty much out of the hurricane belt...but of course that is not to say they don't get them on occasion....cannot comment about the zipline once I get there I rarely leave....have to catch up on my hammock time

No not really..the resort is built on and over the water....and it is on a little islet....sure there is some sandy areas but no Cancun style of beach check out the pics on the website....plenty of sundeck space for lounging around in the sun...check out the webcam it will give you a view of some of the sundecks and the gazebo

If a Beach vacation with some diving is what your after then it would seem CCV is probably not where you want to stay. Most doing 4-5 dives a day have little need for beach. There are all kinds of beach a taxi ride away, Camp Bay, Paya Bay, West Bay, Just to name a few

That is because they are looking at diving and not beaching.

As far as the zip lines, No one has died recently and I am absolutely 100% sure the proper Honduran Government agency is looking over the safety inspections of these things

what RTBdiver said is pretty much spot on....Roatan is all about diving not beaches...with exception to a few down in West End/West Bay area that RTBdiver mentioned Beaches on Roatan Island, Honduras CCV can arrange a taxi for you if think you want to go there....but if you are more into beaches than diving then you may want to look somewhere else IMO

FWIW...FIBR has a nice man made beach and a pool....

Honduran airplanes, submarines, even chairlifts, and ahh yes, zip lines. This is a place where they say, "Plastic rusts".

The Bay Islands: It's not even the Caribbean, some call it the Western Caribbean, it's really Central America. In North America or Europe, such contraptions are highly regulated and inspected. In Honduras, not so much.

If an overweight gal from a cruise ship decides the posted weight limits don't apply to her, that's what causes fun stuff to read about on the internet... for the last three years.

Assume nothing.

There is a great quantity of information here on SB (in this forum) available through a search.

I agree with the above- If you want to dive and dive a lot, CCV. If you want to sit on a beautiful beach- look elsewhere. This is something you would ascertain from prior SB postings in about 5 minutes.

I HIGHLY recommend the diving on the south side of Roatan. The best way to access that diving is from either CocoView Resort or Fantasy Island Beach Resort. These two resorts share the same fabulous southside dive sites, including the lagoon where the shipwreck "Prince Albert" lies. Most of the sites you would be most interested in diving are just a short boat ride away.

That being said, although both resorts are fantastic and share amazing dive opportunities, the personality of each resort is very different. CocoView is usually the preference for hardcore divers who are not interested in other "vacation" diversions. While Fantasy Island CAN be that if you wish, it also presents other options such as a gorgeous swimming pool with a swim-up bar and a BEAUTIFUL half-moon shaped beach that anyone would love. The amenities that attract me personally are the satellite television and internet service, which may also be available at CocoView.

So no matter which resort you feel might fit your style the best, the same awesome dive opportunities will be available to you from either one
