Hey all! Just wanted to know if July/Aug is a good time to go to Roatan..

My fiance' and I are trying to decide on a honeymoon destination then and thought maybe Roatan would be nice. Just want to chill out on the beach, dive, chill out some more. A lot of the posts on here recommend FIBR. Accomodations there sound pretty "basic" but that doesn't bother us. Anybody have any other strong recommendations? Did I read wrong or do little monkeys actually come hang out with you on your hotel balconies?

Is the zipline trip cool? Gotta try a zipline...

Thanks for reading my babbling! :dork2:

Hi Kingscrab -

I am a Fantasy Island fanatic and would be happy to answer any questions for you. That's an absolutely great time of year to visit/dive Roatan. We just got back from FIBR last week, and as it happened we were on the same flight/transfer to the resort with a young couple on their honeymoon. We kept running into them during the 10 days we were there and they were having a blast...and they weren't even divers!

If you are looking for a great beach and diving in the same place, FIBR should definitely be considered...their beach is absolutely gorgeous and you will definitely love the swim-up bar at the swimming pool.

I'd recommend Fantasy Island in a heartbeat...please feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions.

YES! Some of the best viz! Weather is great and less flies! See our web site under Roatan for zip line video!

Thanks for the replies!

Anyway, what airlines have you guys used to get to Roatan? All the really cheap flights seem to route through El Salvador. This doesn't bother me too much, but the layovers are pretty tight. Talking 30-40 minutes. I wouldn't be thrilled to get stuck in the airport overnight. What airlines are the easiest to use to get there? We are budget travelers and don't want to drop too too much on a flight.

Also, does FIBR have an actual website? The only way to book with them seems to be through a dive shop website? Anyone have an EASY link to book with them?

Thanks again!

July/August at FIBR presents a superb opportunity for great diving.

At this time of year, the water column is vibrantly alive with little critters... many of them are invisible except at night with a flashlight. Think "Food Chain".... dinner is served!

FIBR allows you unlimited night dive opportunities in a shallow, sheltered environment- just the place for this kind of annual show.

It starts with the obvious- sometimes the water is filled with those icky creepy swarming "blood worms". Cover over your light and let the other divers attract them! Or... just point your light straight up, sit back, and watch the show. You don't even need to go beyond the FIBR Beach, just sit in the sand in 5' of water, put the flashlight into the sand straight up... and watch carefully. On SCUBA, you will have more air and BT than you have body heat to last. But the show will be darned interesting!

They have much better pix than mine here.....

The water will be quite warm, as well, likely in the high 80's at the surface.

I've gone to Roatan several different ways. If money is a higher priority than piece of mind and time, there are several alternatives. You really can't beat the convenience however of Continental or Delta even though you are paying for that. Taca offers some alternatives out of Miami that are relatively cheap compared to some others.

Thanks for the continuing advice, everyone! I have a local dive shop here that highly recommends CoCo View Resort... Anyone concur?

When is hurricane season in Honduras? What are my odds of getting nailed by one in Early August?

I've also read that someone died on a zip line a couple of years ago. I can only assume that the safety has been revamped since then and greatly improved? :shocked2:

Sorry for my barrage of questions!

It is usually a late season! I have a trip the third week of August and have for years. Been there in September and October as well! Beautiful weather! Also been between TWO one year including Rita! 3 or 4 in a busy year out of 26 weeks is a small chance! Continental all the way and they allow 70lbs dive bag free!
