I do like the idea of the necklace octo. But right now I have a Sherwood Minimus low profile octo, and its design doesn't lend itself well to that method.

I use a low profile reg on a necklace for my singles rig. Works just as well as a standard reg.

I believe that the "standard" length, over the shoulder is 24 inches. The "standard" length under the shoulder is 36 to 40 inches.

A 30 inch hose over the shoulder will have a large loop and under the shoulder it will be short and tug at your mouth.

Not sold on the Miflex thing yet.

The hose that came with my reg actually measures at 33", and it IS long. So I put my rig on, moved the reg over to the left about three inches and looked in the mirror. Looked about right to me at 30". The next size down is a 26" hose, so I moved my reg over another 4" to simulate the 26" hose. Looked fine, except then when I turned my head to the left, my hose dragged on my neck. So I decided to go with the 30".
I also played around putting my hose under my arm, but then I realized I'd have to buy a ninety degree fitting or a swivel to make that work.
Should be here in a day or two.
Curious, what is it about the Miflex hoses that you're not sold on them yet?

If I were to try that with mine, the hose would have it oriented sideways, unless, again with this reg, I installed another 90 degree fitting. Did you attach your bungee to the mouthpiece neck?

As long as it works, good. Yeah, the 26 inch, yep it will tug when you look to the left. It is a compromise, to avoid having a long floppy loop which will also cause the reg to twist (maybe not with a Miflex, dunno.)

As to the Miflex, I don't like the floppiness, I like for the hoses to take a set routing. In the long hose configuration I could see the Miflex being difficult to deploy and stow and in the standard configuration having the primary hose drooping on the shoulder or even looping below or behind the valve if long enough. I have only used them once, I have not made my mind up, but, I didn't like the way they routed and layed in use. Could be wrong. I don't think I am buying a set.

Yes, if you route under your arm you will need either a swivel or preferably a 90 degree fitting.

Hey, I still use a twin hose so don't get me going on those new fangled dangle Miflex hoses, that is just too much change. A solution to a non problem.

Well Nemrod, how 'bout going DIR vintage and go with a 7' twin hose. :D
If my stock hose was any stiffer, I could use it for a leaf spring under my truck, so I'll try a little sloppiness and see how that feels.

I don't think so, I could tie it in a bow maybe. The seven foot thing just does not work, seriously, with a twin hose. The secondary (octo) cannot deploy because it is trapped under the hoses from the twin hose reg. You have to sling it under arm and loop it back on the tank old school cave style. Besides, in long hose philosophy, you are supposed to donate your long hose primary, not two short hoses, lol. Since you were bemoaning your misplaced past down in vintage, just letting you know, :eyebrow:, it don't work.

One vote for miflex hoses - no more mouthpiece tug...

I agree with Nemrod a solution is search of a problem, they seem too floppy to me though ive never tried one myself. I have seen others use them in various applications and the hoses did not seem to route all that well. So count me as not sold on them yet.

I was diving with a buddy who tucked his longhose into a bungee on his tank.... I told him lets go down and do an S-Drill he said "will you help me tuck it back into the tank when we're done".... I got out of the water!
Since most OOA situations aren't actually OOA situations (rolled valve, switching to a stage that's turned off, isolator closed, etc), anyone who doesn't plan to replace the long hose after donation clearly hasn't thought things through very well and isn't someone I'd dive with, either.

To the OP another option is to use a 22 " hose with necklace as your backup and use the hose that was originally for the octo as your primary. I use a swivel (at least it's well made but a 90 degree fitting would work as well) for my primary and route it under the arm.

It keeps the hoses streamlined, retains the advantage of the necklace vs octo approach and I don't have 7 ' of hose to deal with.

I'm not in caves nor am I an instructor and I don't do s-drills at the start of every dive so if someone is really low or out of air we will be a little closer than with the 7 ' setup but I can live with that.

In my opinion anything is better than the octo setup.
