Dropping into a pod of Whales heading south to Mexico. They came into LaJolla Cove and we were in a small inflatable boat. We drifted into the pod and did back rolls. The gentle giants looked at us with their intelligent soccer ball sized eyes and headed back out of the cove. We were within just a few feet of these great creatures.

When I was first learning to dive in the 1980s, there was a Jewfish (Atlantic Goliath Grouper for the PC) living on the wreck of the Rhone. He could not have been less than 600 lbs; very friendly, used to follow divers around (especially on night dives) looking for food.

Then, despite the fact the wreck is a national park, someone shot him with a speargun.

I saw my first ever octopus on a wreck in Florida! No one else was nearby so no one else saw it, and while it was relatively small and I only saw it for a second or two before it camoflaged itself, it was quite the thrill! I've seen a blue-ringed octopus since for a few minutes during a night dive in the Philippines with a group of divers, but that first flash of an octo will always be special.

Did that guy got "accidentally" shot at, after that? ; ) Seriously, that sucks. And no I don't think the guy should be shot at, but I find it extremely selfish and that bothers me for some unknown reason (never dived there, probably never will).

One of the most beautiful thing I saw was the huge light shaft coming down the hole we'd cut in the ice the ice diving course. There was enough particulate matter to make the beam visible but not enough to hinder visibility too much, it looked great with all the air bubbles moving toward it on the bottom of the ice.

...and sharks... sharks are awesome ; )

I've seen a lot of great stuff on dives, but my all time favorite continues to be my Jewfish buddy that I use in my Avatar... That was a VERY Friendly Jewfish, he seemed almost Happy.
