I just finished my DM course in Koh Lanta, and I had a great time. It being low season, the bottleneck was frequently not enough customers to take the boat out, and a couple of weeks of bad weather. I was there from the 2nd week of june till end of August, in which time i did my advance, EFR/First aid, Rescue, nitrox, deep dive and DM. From Koh Lanta, we dived Koh Ha, Phi Phi, the Bida's and one trip to Hin Daeng/Muang. Even in low season, it was great diving, with visibility at its worse around 15m and plenty of days of 30m vis. Also, lots of professional, friendly dive shops (I trained at Lanta Diver and I cannot say enough good things about them).

The weather has certainly turned the past few weeks. Always best to see things in person. Did you dive with the "Big Two"? Check out Samui and Tao as its still in season if you can.

Nothing to do with the weather I am afraid, but lots of other reasons have convinced me to further my training back in the UK where I learned to dive.
I am not going to start naming specific shops, but I am so mystified by the actions of some that I will post my experiences before I leave for home.

Thanks for the info there.
But unfortunately due to reasons other than the diving I am commited to staying in Pattaya this time.

Great place to be Tom.
Just a shame the divings not a bit better, and the dive shops a lot better. But we can't have everything.
Dont rule out Thailand all together, there really are some great dives to do, mainly in South Thailand on the West coast. And personally I like Koh Chang, but forget it this time of year.
Despite your disapointment with the Diving I hope you are having a great time in Pattaya.

I will bhe very interested to read your experiences when you are ready to post them. Had some great diving in the last two days in Pattaya (30m vis on Koh Man Wichai yesterday & 20m on the Khram Wreck today)

You are very lucky there. I have been diving regularly in Pattaya for the past 8 years, sometimes on a daily basis for lengthy periods and have never seen visibility anything like that, infact I would go as far as to say in my experience 10m is very unusual.
Maybe one day I will have the same good luck.

I have been diving there 3 years and on only on occasion had anything near that (on Koh Rin). We thought it would be a good day on the Khram but had to set off at 6am to get there early for the tides.

Should be some good diving to be had in the next month - currents are getting later each day and the vis should get to it's yearly best soon.

Which shop were you diving with?
I have recently dived with 5 different shops in Pattaya and all they seem to do is dive at a certain time of day with absolutely no regard for the tides and currents.
On some days this really made the diving hard work and unpleasant, I really dont understand why shops do this. A little forward planning could improve things for the divers significantly.

Yes I agree, over the last few weeks I have done 12 days diving in Pattaya and at most not had much above 5 metres viz, is this normal all year round?
