All of you have been great! And I'm convinced. No HUB for me. Now I'm back to choosing a BC. I'll check the threads before I ask questions.
Thanks Again,
Dafydd

Eternity has begun,
What are you doing with yours?

Hi Dafydd,

Another point to consider is that good quality dive gear if maintained properly will last for years. I would bet that 90% of all dive gear is replaced simply because the diver wants the new, latest and greatest version rather than it being worn out and unserviceable (excluding the storerooms of items that we just had to have, only to realize we really did not want/like it after getting it.) I have an old Sherwood reg and Tekna BC, about 1984 vintage, both are still in good shape with only cosmetic damage and the only reason I got new gear was because I wanted it (Ranger BC (2000) and Zeagle reg (1999)). They remain as my backup/ buddy needs to borrow something gear. The point I am making is that this gear will last you a very long time so make sure that the gear you select is right for you. The HUB may be what you want, only you can make that call. In any case, take your time making a decision. Get some UW time in and try a varity of gear styles and models. You will most likely spend a bit more money up frount but it will cost you less in the long run.

Power DEFLATE? Yikes. Might I suggest the HUB have some
"elastomeric bungee-bondage-bands" ?

Green,
You slay me!

If I paid 2 grand for it, you bet I'm gonna love it and never say anything to the contraray.

The Hub rates right up there with some of the better gimmicks in SCUBA, such as the Kazoo Phone or whatever the name of that "affordable underwater communication device" that was spammed here last year, and the George Jetson scooter boots.

No i do not own a HUB, but i do own a mares dragonfly as well as many other BCs. Let me set the record straight... you CAN change the reg, and octo, and computer on the HUB. Its as simple as removing the backplate and using a wrench, and yes i have worked on HUBs at the store i work for.

Now that we got that cleared up, Ill admit im not a big fan of the HUB but for people who travel alot and are strictly recreational divers its fine. The new MARES hub is weight intergrated as well for people that want that feature.

For those of you who like the idea of the HUB, but not the reg setup the MARES dragonfly has all the features of the MARES HUB without the reg, oct, computer being integrated for those of you who want to pick there own reg setup and dont like the idea of dropping off the entire BC evertime your reg needs service.

I thought a Aluminum backplate and harness with a small wing would be much easier to pack then the HUB. Which would make it better for travel as well as rec and tech.

I havn't yet seen a good explanation why one would buy a BC over a Backplate and harness. The backplate and harness is so much easier to use for new divers. Getting used to the back inflate isn't that difficult of a skill to learn. Better than dealing with the squeeze of a BC. And no extra junk on it to confuse a new diver. Just what you need. And by gosh you can upgrade it to even cave dive or wreck dive or just to carry your tank into the shop on your back. I'm suprised Ronco didn't come up with it.

But I still use my Transpac 2 regularly. I like my backplate better than any BC I've used though. But I don't like having gear I don't use so gotta get the transpac wet too......

 Hi!!
I'm am heading to Asia for a while (at least 2 years) and I am in the market for a dive system. I pretty much rec. dive but will continue to get more advance out in Asia.

I was wondering if anyone has had experienced with Mares H.U.B systems (including Advantgarde) and what you thought about them.

I was also considering the Mares Dragonfly Airtrim.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks!!

I thought it was the diver's first time out with it, but it wasn't. He had over six dives and was still trying to figure it all out. Even had his manual on the boat with him. He was not comfortable at all with the pneumatic fill/vent operations. In fact after his last dive, he appeared sort of frazzeled. Not having seen him try to dive anything else, I could not be certain if this was due to the BC or the diver. Needless to say, the HUB did not make him look very professional in our eyes.

It is IMHO an abomination but there are folks who will buy it
(why don't we have a head shaking from side to side smilie?)

IMO, the HUB has its place. That would be... the trash pile.
I'd rather see someone with a horse collar BC and backpack any day.
